To contribute to the differentiation of Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET), we compared two different artificial neural network classifiers using I-123-FP-CIT SPECT data, a probabilistic neural network (PNN) and a classification tree (ClT). I-123-FP-CIT brain SPECT with semiquantitative analysis was performed in 216 patients: 89 with ET, 64 with PD with a Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) score of a parts per thousand currency sign2 (early PD), and 63 with PD with a H&Y score of a parts per thousand yen2.5 (advanced PD). For each of the 1,000 experiments carried out, 108 patients were randomly selected as the PNN training set, while the remaining 108 validated the trained PNN, and the percentage of the validation data correctly classified in the three groups of patients was computed. The expected performance of an average performance PNN was evaluated. In analogy, for ClT 1,000 classification trees with similar structures were generated. For PNN, the probability of correct classification in patients with early PD was 81.9 +/- 8.1% (mean +/- SD), in patients with advanced PD 78.9 +/- 8.1%, and in ET patients 96.6 +/- 2.6%. For ClT, the first decision rule gave a mean value for the putamen of 5.99, which resulted in a probability of correct classification of 93.5 +/- 3.4%. This means that patients with putamen values > 5.99 were classified as having ET, while patients with putamen values < 5.99 were classified as having PD. Furthermore, if the caudate nucleus value was higher than 6.97 patients were classified as having early PD (probability 69.8 +/- 5.3%), and if the value was < 6.97 patients were classified as having advanced PD (probability 88.1%+/- 8.8%). These results confirm that PNN achieved valid classification results. Furthermore, ClT provided reliable cut-off values able to differentiate ET and PD of different severities.

Molecular and Metabolic Imaging of Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer: State of Art and Future Prospects

Luca Filippi, Agostino Chiaravalloti, Pietro Basile, Orazio Schillaci, Oreste Bagni

Summary: Prostate cancer is one of the most common tumors in males and a major cause of death in Western countries. When standard treatment fails, novel therapies have dramatically improved the prognosis of advanced prostate cancer. However, there is a need for imaging biomarkers to assess treatment response and personalize therapeutic approaches.

A novel vision-based weakly supervised framework for autonomous yield estimation in agricultural applications

Enrico Bellocchio, Francesco Crocetti, Gabriele Costante, Mario Luca Fravolini, Paolo Valigi

Summary: Autonomous systems have revolutionized agriculture with their resource optimization and labor-saving capabilities. However, existing solutions for monitoring activities in agriculture, such as yield estimation, rely on expensive robotic platforms equipped with range devices. This paper proposes a novel approach that uses vision-based strategies and a weakly-supervised paradigm to perform yield estimation using only a monocular camera and limited supervision information. The proposed approach reduces deployment time, energy consumption, and cost, while maintaining performance comparable to fully supervised baselines and classical sensor-based systems.

Summary: A robust data-driven scheme for Fault Detection, Isolation and Estimation of multiple sensor faults is proposed and validated. The scheme achieves robustness to modeling uncertainty and noise through optimized design. The proposed scheme is applied to a set of 8 sensors of a semi-autonomous aircraft and compared with other multiple Fault Diagnosis schemes.

Data-Driven Fault Diagnosis Techniques: Non-Linear Directional Residual vs. Machine-Learning-Based Methods

Nicholas Cartocci, Marcello R. Napolitano, Francesco Crocetti, Gabriele Costante, Paolo Valigi, Mario L. Fravolini

Summary: This paper proposes a non-linear additive model to characterize the non-linear redundancy relationships among the system signals. Using the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) algorithm, these relationships are identified directly from the data and then linearized to derive a fault signature matrix. The faulty sensor can be isolated by measuring the angular distance between the fault signature matrix and the primary residual vector. Real data from multiple flights of a semi-autonomous aircraft is utilized for a quantitative analysis and comparison with state-of-the-art machine-learning-based fault diagnosis algorithms.

Prostate-specific membrane antigen-directed imaging and radioguided surgery with single-photon emission computed tomography: state of the art and future outlook

Luca Filippi, Barbara Palumbo, Viviana Frantellizzi, Susanna Nuvoli, Giuseppe De Vincentis, Angela Spanu, Orazio Schillaci

Summary: PSMA has emerged as an important target for prostate cancer diagnosis and therapy. This study reviews different methods for labeling PSMA ligands with gamma-emitting nuclides and discusses the applications of these tracers in imaging PC patients. The use of PSMA-targeted SPECT tracers in radioguided surgery is also explored. Expert opinion suggests that radioguided surgery has shown promising results and PSMA-targeted SPECT/CT may be a cost-effective alternative to PSMA PET/CT.

Summary: This study reviewed the application of radiolabeled-FAPI in patients with pancreatic cancer, discussing its advantages, disadvantages, and future prospects, especially in the field of theragnostic. A literature search was performed in PubMed, EBSCO, and EMBASE databases, and 21 studies were selected for comprehensive analysis. The results showed that FAPI could better detect pancreatic malignant lesions, but further prospective studies are needed to validate its effectiveness.

Summary: In the past decade, two new radionuclide-based therapies, (223)Radichloride and radioligand therapy (RLT) targeting prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), have been approved for the management of castrate-resistant prostate cancer (PCa). This article illustrates the basic principles of PCa molecular imaging, with a focus on the combined use of diagnosis and therapy for response prediction and assessment. Radiomics, an emerging discipline based on quantitative features extracted from medical images, is also discussed for its potential in this field.
