Summary: Ultrafast laser-induced heating of ferrimagnetic iron garnet in an external magnetic field leads to large amplitude magnetization precessional dynamics. Through experimental and computational exploration of the three-dimensional parameter space of magnetic field, laser fluence, and sample temperature, we have identified the conditions for achieving the largest precession amplitude, even sufficient for magnetic recording. The range of external magnetic fields and temperatures for magnetic recording is found to be narrow, determined by the optimal height of the potential barrier between stable states.

Summary: A novel Bi2WO6/Si heterostructure photocatalyst was developed in this study, which showed a shift of the Fermi level to the valence band, effectively reducing the difficulty of electron holes generation. The photocatalysts with special branch structure achieved an increased surface area and the ability to absorb visible light. The presence of heterojunction enhanced the separation of photo-excited electron-hole pairs and prolonged the electron lifetime, resulting in efficient reduction of CO2.

Summary: The speed difference between surface diffusion and bulk diffusion in glasses is closely related to the bulk fragility of the glasses. Stronger liquids exhibit greater resistance to dynamic excitation from bulk to surface, impacting the prediction of surface diffusion, surface crystallization, and the formation of stable glasses by vapor deposition.

Summary: This study evaluated the applicability of voltammetry for the on-site determination and speciation of iron. The Square Wave Adsoptive Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (SW-AdCSV) technique with a modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was used for the determination of iron (III) in synthetic solutions and a Standard Reference Material (SRM). The method was then applied to real water samples and compared with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The results demonstrated the excellent applicability of the proposed on-site voltammetric procedure for the determination of iron and its speciation in water.

Summary: This study analyzed the fractionation of iron in main coastal rivers to Yantai Sishili Bay using an electrochemical sensor based on bismuth microrods. The results showed that particulate iron (PFe) was the main fraction of iron in the rivers, accounting for a high percentage in each. Relationships between iron concentration and factors such as tidal action, salinity, and dissolved oxygen were also investigated.

Summary: Co-adsorption of Pb and Bi onto Si(111) and Ge(111) surfaces leads to the formation of atomic-layer PbBi compounds with similar structures. These compounds exhibit different electronic properties, with the PbBi compound on Ge(111) showing a distinct behavior compared to that on Si(111). These findings are expected to be significant for the development of new electronic devices in the ultimate two-dimensional limit.

Summary: Fe-6.5 wt.% Si nanocrystalline alloys with good magnetic softness were prepared by mechanical alloying via a high-energy ball mill. The alloying process results in the formation of a single solid-solution phase with a grain size of about 10 nm. Ball-milling effectively reduces the particle size of the alloy powders and controls the particle size distribution. The Fe-Si alloy powders show good magnetic softness, with a saturation magnetization of about 198 Am-2/kg and coercivity of about 20 A/m.

Summary: This study describes the selective intermolecular homodimerization and cross-cycloaddition of vinylsilanes with unbiased 1,3-dienes catalyzed by a pyridine-2,6-diimine (PDI) iron complex. The chemoselectivity of these reactions was found to be distinct from that of similar alpha-olefin reactions with 1,3-dienes. Mechanistic studies provided insights into substrate-controlled regioselectivity, and identified diamagnetic iron diene and paramagnetic iron olefin complexes as catalyst resting states. The relative rates of beta-H elimination and C-C reductive elimination were ultimately governed by the silyl substituents, dictating final product formation.

Summary: Six new transition-metal aryloxides were synthesized and characterized to compare the steric and dispersive characteristics of their substituents. The results show that the -C6H2-2,4,6-Cy-3 substituent has higher dispersive energy donor properties and influences the thermal stability. Complexes 1 and 2 exhibit high thermal stability and short-contact H···H interactions, while complexes 5 and 6 have a lower association number due to the lower dispersion energy donor properties of the -OC6H3-2,6-Pr-i (2) ligand.

Summary: This study explores N-alkylation and N-metallation of pyridine to understand how metal-ligand complexes can mimic NAD(+) redox chemistry. The syntheses of substituted dipyrazolylpyridine (pz(2)P) compounds (pz(2)P)Me+ (1(+)) and (pz(2)P)GaCl2+ (2(+)) are reported and compared with previous transition element pz(2)P complexes. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show that cationic 1(+) and 2(+) exhibit irreversible reduction events at an anodic potential of SIM;900 mV, unlike the neutral pz(2)P complexes of divalent metals.

Summary: Substrates designed for 1,4-C-H insertion to produce benzocyclobutenes underwent a unique elimination reaction, resulting in the formation of ortho-quinone dimethide (o-QDM) intermediates that further participated in Diels-Alder or hetero-Diels-Alder cycloadditions. The analogous benzylic acetals or ethers, on the other hand, bypassed the C-H insertion pathway and, after hydride transfer, underwent a de-aromatizing elimination reaction to form o-QDM at ambient temperature. The resulting dienes exhibited high diastereo- and regio-selectivity when involved in various cycloaddition reactions. This method represents a rare example of catalytic o-QDM generation without the involvement of a benzocyclobutene, and it offers a mild and ambient temperature approach to access these valuable intermediates. DFT calculations provided support for the proposed mechanism. Furthermore, this methodology was successfully applied to the synthesis of (+/-)-isolariciresinol with an overall yield of 41%.
