Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between specific geriatric assessment (GA) domains and the survival rate of older patients with breast cancer. A total of 541 patients aged 65 years and above were analyzed, and the study found that functional impairment, severe comorbidities, and impaired psychological state were significantly associated with worse survival rates.

Summary: This study applied a novel comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) strategy to evaluate older patients undergoing orthopedic surgery comprehensively and identify potential risk factors for postoperative complications. The study found that spinal fusion, blood loss, poor activities of daily living (ADL), significant dependence in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), poor renal function, and malnutrition were independent risk factors for postoperative complications in older orthopedic surgery patients.

Summary: By analyzing 715 patients with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) or adenocarcinoma (AC) who received neoadjuvant treatment, it was found that combining histopathologic regression and nodal status can improve the prediction of survival after treatment.

Summary: The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) has been found to be a useful tool in predicting the risk of postoperative major complications and long-term prognosis in elderly rectal cancer patients who undergo surgical treatment after neoadjuvant therapy. This study concludes that the GNRI is a simple and effective tool for assessing the nutritional status and prognosis in geriatric cancer patients.

Summary: Preoperative comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is associated with the risk of postoperative complications in older patients with esophageal cancer. Patients in the frail group have a higher incidence of postoperative complications, longer hospitalization time, and lower survival rate.

Summary: The study found a lack of sufficient information in the literature for evidence-based estimation of life expectancy beyond two years for geriatric patients with femoral neck fractures. There is a need for additional data collection, analysis, and reporting regarding survival after surgical treatment for hip fractures in the elderly population.

Summary: The study found that treatment at high-volume centers (HVC) and academic centers (AC) was associated with improved overall survival (OS) for patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAC). However, considering mediating variables reduced the magnitude of this benefit. Further research is needed to identify patients who would benefit most from selective referral to HVC or AC.

Summary: This study examined the effects of hospital volume, facility type, and travel distance on overall survival in patients undergoing surgery for pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The results showed that treatment at high-volume centers or academic centers was associated with a lower risk of death, while travel distance did not impact overall survival. Mediating variables explained a portion of the survival benefit.

Summary: The study compared the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and surgical resection (SR) in patients with T1bN0M0 papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in different age groups. Results showed that RFA had similar prognosis as SR but with lower overall cost, making it a potential alternative treatment for patients with T1bN0M0 PTC.

Summary: Maintaining a good functional status is crucial for older adults with cancer. This study explores the association between comprehensive geriatric assessment results and independence in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) one year after chemotherapy. It also examines overall survival (OS) and premature termination of chemotherapy. The study found that half of the patients were able to maintain IADL independence, functional status, and quality of life one year after chemotherapy. An abnormal G8-score before chemotherapy was associated with progressive disease, decline of IADL independence, prematurely terminated chemotherapy, and shorter median OS.

Summary: This study analyzed the long-term survival and recurrence patterns after pathological complete response (pCR) with and without nodal metastases following multimodal treatment of esophageal cancer. Results showed that patients without nodal metastases had higher 5-year overall survival compared to patients with metastatic nodes. The presence of nodal metastases predicted both locoregional and distant recurrence. Follow-up recommendations should take into account the presence or absence of nodal metastases in patients with pCR, and caution should be exercised when considering watch-and-wait surveillance strategies for suspected clinical complete response.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the contribution of mediators that may explain racial/ethnic disparities in breast cancer treatment delays. The results showed that education, comorbidities, insurance, and facility type are the mediators contributing to these disparities. Efforts to equalize these factors could reduce the unfairness experienced by minority patients in terms of treatment delays.

Summary: Introduction: Prescription opioids, including those prescribed after surgery, have greatly contributed to the US opioid epidemic. Educating opioid prescribers is a crucial component of ensuring the safe use of opioids among surgical patients. This study implemented an annual education curriculum for new surgical prescribers, resulting in significant improvements in knowledge and comfort levels. However, there remains a persistent knowledge and comfort gap among these prescribers.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using humanized anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) antibodies conjugated with near-infrared dyes to specifically label gastric cancers in mouse models. Orthotopic models showed bright and specific labeling with more than ten times higher tumor-to-background ratios compared to the control. Summary: This scoping review analyzed the literature on the use of broadband personality tests in the bariatric surgical population to optimize weight loss outcomes. The study found significant associations between personality scales and weight loss, but inconsistent reporting of outcome measures made it challenging to draw concrete conclusions. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommends standardization of outcome reporting to improve the reliability of predicting weight loss outcomes.
