Summary: Acute pancreatitis is a dangerous inflammatory disease of the pancreas with a high mortality rate. It is primarily caused by gallstone migration and alcohol abuse. The activation of trypsinogen, infiltration of inflammatory cells, and destruction of secretory cells are the main characteristics of this disease. However, there are controversies and uncertainties regarding the diagnostic and therapeutic methods due to incomplete understanding of its pathophysiology.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the current data on acute pancreatitis (AP) in Helsinki. Electronic health care records (EHRs) of AP patients treated at Helsinki University Hospital between 2016 and 2018 were analyzed. The incidence, etiology, potential risk factors, and severity of AP were documented. The study found 1378 AP episodes in 1084 patients during the study period, with a domicile-adjusted incidence of 42.2/100,000. Alcohol etiology accounted for 47% of the cases, while biliary etiology accounted for 23%. The study also identified smoking and anticoagulation medication use as factors associated with AP. Additionally, recurrent AP, female sex, and normal BMI were associated with a milder form of AP.

Summary: Conversions from partial to radical nephrectomy are rare and have decreased over time. Male sex, Charlson score, and tumor location were associated with increased odds of conversion.

Summary: This study investigated the common causes, routine diagnostic and therapeutic methods of acute pancreatitis in children in a pediatric gastrointestinal referral center. There were variations in causes and methods among different centers. It is important to consider the association between acute pancreatitis and systemic and metabolic diseases as well as the use of anticonvulsant drugs. The risks of unnecessary CT scans and inappropriate antibiotic prescription should be emphasized.

Summary: Daily, large ingestions of soymilk can potentially lead to acute pancreatitis due to the trypsin inhibitor in soybean, which reduces trypsin activity and can cause inappropriate increase in intrapancreatic trypsin secretion when intestinal proteolytic activity decreases, exceeding the capacity of pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor.

Summary: COVID-19 can cause acute pancreatitis, potentially due to direct infection of pancreatic cells by the virus and indirect effects of systemic inflammation. However, the clinical characteristics of COVID-19-attributed pancreatitis remain uncertain, and further research is needed to clarify its etiology and differential diagnosis methods.

Summary: This study found that genetic, metabolic, and pancreaticobiliary diseases were the common etiologies of ARP and CP among children in a developing country in Southeast Asia, emphasizing the importance of early etiological diagnosis and monitoring for pancreatic insufficiency in ARP/CP.

Summary: Patients with hyperamylasemia on postoperative day 1 have higher morbidity and mortality risks. Postoperative acute pancreatitis defined by CT scan has a higher incidence and severity.

Summary: Acute on chronic pancreatitis (ACP) is a common condition, but there are significant gaps in our knowledge about it. Through a systematic review and expert consensus, a new definition of ACP was reached. Despite the poor evidence base, this position statement provides a foundation for the management of ACP.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the incidence, health-care burden, and predictors of readmission in patients with acute alcoholic pancreatitis (AAP). The study found that the 11-month readmission rate for AAP patients was 43.1%. The main cause of readmission was another episode of AAP. Readmission was associated with significant resource utilization, and patients with underlying chronic alcoholic pancreatitis were at an increased risk of readmission.

Summary: This study examined the potential use of serum immune profiling as biomarkers for pancreatitis. The analysis of 92 immune markers identified 33 markers that could differentiate pancreatitis patients from healthy individuals. IL17 signaling was found to play a crucial role in chronic pancreatitis, and was associated with smoking, alcohol, and diabetes status.

Summary: Before the diagnosis of CP, 72.1% of patients had a history of AP. Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption were risk factors for AP, while age at CP onset, harboring the SPINK1 mutation, diabetes, and steatorrhea were protective factors. Alcoholic CP was the only independent risk factor for recurrent AP attacks.

Summary: Acute pancreatitis is a common reason for emergency hospital admission, with increasing numbers in recent years, and can lead to systemic, local, and vascular complications. A 73-year-old male patient presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, and was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis after an imaging test revealed an intraventricular thrombus. This case represents the first reported instance in the literature of an intraventricular thrombus related to the prothrombotic process of acute pancreatitis.
