Objective: To evaluate the relationship between serum total testosterone (TT) level and lipid profile after adjusting for some traditional confounding factors, free thyroid hormones and TSH in Chinese men. Methods: This was a retrospective study based on an epidemiological investigation including 11 000 subjects. Bivariate and partial correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, and a general linear model were used to assess the influence of TT on the lipid profile. Additionally, the odds ratios (ORs) (95% CIs) for hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-C in relation to TT categories were calculated using logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 4114 subjects whose mean age was 56.04 +/- 8.75 years were finally analyzed. There was a significant linear trend toward lower total cholesterol (TC), lower triglycerides (TG), and higher HDL-C with increasing serum TT, which remained significant after adjusting for age, BMI, fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, free triiodothyronine, free thyroxine, and TSH. Compared with the bottom quartile of TT, the adjusted OR (95% CI) for hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-C was 0.082 (0.048- 0.138, P=0.000) and 0.669 (0.503-0.891, P=0.006) respectively in the top quartile of TT. Conclusions: TT was correlated negatively and linearly with TC, TG, and LDL-C and positively and linearly with HDL-C. Low TT might have adverse effects on the lipid profile and thus represent a risk factor for hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, high LDL-C, and low HDL-C, suggesting the importance of maintaining an appropriate TT level in men.

Summary: The aim of this study was to explore the associations of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) time and sedentary (SED) time with a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and multifactorial control status among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in China. The study found that higher MVPA time was associated with lower odds of CVD risk, regardless of SED time, among patients with T2DM. Rating: 8/10.

Summary: As the diagnostic criteria for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) do not exclude alcohol consumption, some patients initially diagnosed with alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) may be diagnosed with dual-etiology fatty liver disease (AFLD&MAFLD). It is important to explore the impact of this classification change on clinical manifestations.

Summary: This study found a correlation between muscle distribution and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Higher muscle mass in the lower limbs, extremities, and trunk was associated with a lower risk of NAFLD. Furthermore, a decrease in muscle mass in the lower limbs and trunk was linked to increased severity of NAFLD.

Promising applications of red cell distribution width in diagnosis and prognosis of diseases with or without disordered iron metabolism

Yashuang Yang, Quanshu Wang, Ling Gao, Sijin Liu, Jiajun Zhao, Guoliang Liu, Shuping Zhang

Summary: Many indicators, including RDW and iron metabolism, are sensitive to various risk factors and are associated with pathological alterations and disease onset. Increased RDW indicates various conditions such as iron deficiency anemia and chronic inflammation. Understanding the factors affecting RDW, such as disordered iron metabolism and oxidative stress, can be valuable in diagnosing and monitoring pathological conditions.

CD16+ monocytes are involved in the hyper-inflammatory state of Prader-Willi Syndrome by single-cell transcriptomic analysis

Summary: Patients with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) show hyper-inflammatory state in their peripheral immune cells, characterized by increased CD16(+) monocytes. These monocytes transmit chemokine and cytokine signaling to drive inflammatory process in other cell types. This study provides insights into the characteristics of peripheral immune cells in PWS at the single cell level and suggests potential targets for immunotherapy in the future.

Atypical pituitary hormone-target tissue axis

Chao Xu, Zhao He, Yongfeng Song, Shanshan Shao, Guang Yang, Jiajun Zhao

Summary: It has been traditionally believed that pituitary hormones act on their cognate receptors in classical target glands to carry out their various functions. However, recent studies have revealed that multiple types of pituitary hormone receptors are widely expressed in non-classical target organs. This article summarizes the additional biological functions of pituitary hormones (thyroid-stimulating hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, adrenocorticotrophic hormone, and prolactin) when they act on non-classical organs, defining them as part of an atypical pituitary hormone-target tissue axis. This novel concept provides insight into the mechanisms behind metabolic diseases and offers potential novel therapeutic targets.

Association between Metabolic Obesity Phenotypes and the Burden of Hospitalized Postmenopausal Patients Concomitant with Osteoporosis: A Retrospective Cohort Study Based on the National Readmission Database

Jie Jiang, Chao Xu, Zinuo Yuan, Junming Han, Zhixiang Wang, Yang Tian, Yingchun Dong, Weibo Xia, Xiude Fan, Jiajun Zhao

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different metabolic obesity phenotypes on the burden of postmenopausal hospitalized patients with osteoporosis. It found that metabolic abnormalities were associated with elevated rates and risks of 30- or 90-day readmission among these patients, while obesity did not seem to be innocent. The combination of these factors led to an additional burden on healthcare systems and individuals.

Summary: By analyzing 12 variables related to body fat, glycemic measures, pancreatic b cell function, insulin resistance, blood lipids, and liver enzymes, the study examined the cluster characteristics of prediabetes and their associations with the development of diabetes and its complications. Significant differences in the risks of diabetes and its complications were observed among different clusters. Prediabetes in cluster 4, characterized by obesity and insulin resistance, had a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases compared to other clusters. This subcategorization has the potential to develop more precise strategies for targeted prediabetes prevention and treatment.
