Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, two different approaches were used to estimate excess mortality in Switzerland in 2022. The first approach compared mortality rates and life expectancies in 2022 with the pre-pandemic year 2019, while the second approach compared them with the pre-pandemic downward trend in mortality. According to the first approach, excess mortality rates were 2.6% and 2.5% for men and women, respectively, while the second approach showed higher rates of 8.4% and 6.0%. The main cause of excess mortality in 2022 was age classes over 80 according to the first approach, and significant excess mortality was also found in most age classes above 30 using the second approach. Overall, considering the pre-pandemic trend resulted in three times higher excess mortality and loss of life expectancy compared to simply comparing 2022 with 2019.

Summary: This study compared the mortality rate and life expectancy of politicians with age and gender-matched general populations in 11 developed countries. The research found that over the past century, there has been an increasing relative mortality rate and survival difference among politicians, leading to significant inequalities.

Summary: Recent findings of E. garfiai in wild boars in southern Italy highlight the need for epidemiological data collection on this parasite. This study analyzed the prevalence of E. garfiai in relation to altitude in different provinces of southern and central Italy. The results showed that the parasite is more common at altitudes above 900 m, likely due to a higher presence of earthworms in the soil.

Summary: A comparative study was conducted on the synthesis of SrAl2O4 using solid-state reaction and combustion synthesis. The results showed the superiority of the combustion synthesis method in terms of thermal efficiency. This study also opened up new perspectives on using perchlorates to synthesize highly crystalline SrAl2O4-based materials.

Summary: This review summarizes key methods for estimating years of life lost (YLL) and discusses their differences and implementation in current software. The study applies these methods to a real-world example using data from UK Biobank and multimorbidity. The results show that different methods yield different estimates of YLL, and researchers should consider the purpose of the research, available data, and model flexibility when choosing an estimation method.

Summary: This study describes life expectancy calculations for US counties and compares them with commonly used metrics like YPLL-75 and PAAM. It found a strong negative correlation between life expectancy and YPLL-75 and PAAM at the county level, as well as associations with other key health metrics. Improvement in health factors was linked to improvements in length-of-life measures.

Summary: Human activities pose a growing threat to the future of the ecosystem in Turkey. The study examines the impact of factors such as life expectancy, hydropower consumption, income, trade openness, and globalization on environmental pressure. The results show that life expectancy increases environmental pressure, while hydropower consumption has no significant effect. Globalization and trade openness, on the other hand, reduce environmental pressure. The estimated turning point of the environmental Kuznets curve is far from the actual situation in Turkey.

Summary: Policymakers in low and lower-middle income countries often struggle to balance saving lives and maintaining livelihoods. This paper presents a study conducted in Tanzania, estimating the value individuals place on an additional year of life expectancy. By combining data on subjective well-being and population mortality, the study finds that individuals are willing to trade off around 9% of their annual consumption expenditure to gain an extra year of remaining life expectancy. This highlights the potential use of life satisfaction measures in estimating the value of longevity changes in environments where traditional methods are not feasible.

Summary: Agricultural activity has negative effects on the environment, and organic agriculture is believed to be more sustainable than conventional agriculture, although this is debated. This study evaluated the environmental impact of organic and conventional hazelnut farming systems in Italy, and found that organic cultivation had higher environmental impact except for ecotoxicity related categories. Sensitivity analysis showed that yield is the main driver of environmental results.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of glycemic biomarkers on COVID-19. The results showed that age, kidney function, blood glucose levels, and HbA(1c) were important predictors of severe COVID-19. C-peptide levels were also associated with various clinical indicators and could predict leukocytosis. Optimizing glycemic control and early detection of diabetes are crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.
