Re-activation of molecules active in embryogenesis can play an important role in cancer, since they can provide tumor cells with malignant properties. Several members of the family of POU transcription factors are essential for the development of the nervous system and several are expressed in the neural crest, which is the same location where melanocytic cells develop from. Here, the POU transcription factor family and its role in melanocytic transformation and melanoma are reviewed. (C) 2013 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
