Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors and biomarkers of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis (CA) and carotid artery stenosis (CAS) in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Carotid ultrasonography and evaluation of various clinical parameters were conducted on 389 patients. The results showed that age, sex, glycemic control, complications, and comorbidities were associated with subclinical CA, while factors such as blood pressure, insulin dosage, and kidney function were associated with CAS.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association between overall oxidative stress, oxidized lipoproteins, and glycemic variability with early macro-vascular damage in type 1 diabetes (T1D), in addition to traditional risk factors. The results showed that oxidative stress, gender, insulin dose, diabetes duration, and changes in lipids and blood pressure contributed to the variance of early vascular damage in young patients with T1D.

Summary: The study found that in adults aged 45 and older, the incidence of diabetes is significantly higher among Black individuals compared to White individuals. Adjusting for age and prediabetes, Black women had a higher risk of diabetes compared to White women, and Black men had a higher risk compared to White men. The individual factors that had the most impact on attenuating the racial disparity were dietary patterns and neighborhood socioeconomic environment for men, and BMI and waist circumference for women. Overall, after considering all factors, the racial disparity in diabetes incidence was similar for men and attenuated for women.

Summary: This prospective cohort study found that childhood cardiovascular risk factors, including BMI, systolic blood pressure, lipid levels, and smoking, were associated with cardiovascular events in adulthood. Childhood risk factors and the change in risk score between childhood and adulthood were associated with midlife cardiovascular events.

Summary: In this study, an artificial intelligence model was developed to identify cardiovascular disease using multimodal data including clinical risk factors and fundus photographs. The model achieved high accuracy in both validation datasets and suggested that fundus photography can serve as a possible predictive marker for CVD.

Summary: Imbalance between injury and endogenous protective factors is believed to be the cause of vascular complications in patients with diabetes. Glucagon-like peptide-1 based drugs have been proven to be effective and recommended for the treatment of diabetic patients with high risks or established arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Multiple endogenous protective factors play an important role in combating injury factors and maintaining vascular homeostasis in diabetes.

Summary: This study found a high prevalence of HRP in asymptomatic T2D patients, with HRP detection associated with specific patient characteristics. HRP was not correlated with high CACS, as HRP could be found even in patients with zero CACS.

Summary: Exosomes are small membranous vesicles that contain biological material and can mediate cell-to-cell communication, maintaining homeostasis or modulating disease processes. They play a crucial role in cardiovascular diseases and have potential diagnostic value, although their specific physiological and pathophysiological functions in the cardiovascular system are still not fully understood.

Summary: A polygenic risk score for GDM was developed to investigate its genetic architecture and its relation to genetically constructed risk factors and biomarkers. The polygenic risk score can be used as an early screening tool to identify women at higher risk of GDM for comprehensive monitoring and preventative programs.

Summary: Studies suggest that variability of risk factors such as blood pressure, plasma lipids, and weight may play a role in diabetes complications, with potential additive effects. While causality of variability is uncertain, monitoring risk factor variability in clinical practice could improve quality of care.

Summary: Atherosclerosis, the leading cause of cardiovascular disease worldwide, is influenced not only by dyslipidemia but also chronic inflammation and immune system abnormalities. Natural killer cells, an understudied immune cell type, may play a role in vascular homeostasis and offer potential for new therapies. Understanding the pathophysiology of natural killer cells in atherosclerosis and associated risk factors could lead to preventive and treatment strategies.
