Summary: This study evaluates the global disease burden of mesothelioma and its trends by age, sex, and geographic locations. The findings show a substantial declining incidence trend of mesothelioma in the past decade, possibly related to the restriction of asbestos use in some countries, although an increase was observed in Bulgaria and Korea.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzed the incidence, risk factors, and trends of small intestinal cancer by sex, age, and country. It found a significant geographic disparity in the burden of small intestinal cancer, with higher incidence in countries with higher human development index, gross domestic product, and prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle habits, metabolic disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease. The study also revealed an overall increasing trend in small intestinal cancer incidence.

Summary: The aim of this study is to estimate the incidence and identify risk factors for de novo postpartum hypertension (dn-PPHTN) among a diverse safety-net hospital population. The study found that more than 10% of patients without a history of hypertension will develop dn-PPHTN in the year after delivery. Risk factors include age >= 35 years, cesarean delivery, and smoking.

Summary: Gynecological cancers, the most common among women worldwide, have a significant impact on reproductive system function and quality of life. The epidemiological patterns of these cancers vary across regions and change over time. Improving patient outcomes requires addressing the challenges and evaluating reported risk factors in gynecological cancers. Preventive measures, modifiable lifestyles, and early detection in high-risk groups are effective strategies for reducing mortality rates. This review provides a summary of the epidemiology, global risk factors, and management approaches for gynecological cancers to improve the quality of life in affected patients.

Summary: Lung cancer is the second most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Its incidence and mortality rates are associated with Human Development Index, Gross Domestic Products, and smoking prevalence. Most countries show increasing trends in lung cancer incidence and mortality among females, but decreasing trends among males. Measures to control the increasing trends among females and early cancer detection should be implemented in these regions.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the incidence and risk factors associated with postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing hysterectomy for benign indications, with a focus on the impact of the surgical route. The study found that the overall incidence of VTE was low in this population, and the risk was higher for patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy compared to laparoscopic and vaginal hysterectomy. Additionally, a higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification was independently associated with postoperative VTE.

Summary: This study found that inadvertent hypothermia was common among patients admitted to the ICU after surgery, especially among elderly patients, those undergoing abdominal surgeries, those with longer procedures, and those with more comorbidities. Low postoperative temperature was associated with postoperative complications, particularly coagulation and infection-related complications.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed hospitalized patients who underwent ophthalmic surgeries at Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 2012 and 2022 to explore the incidence, risk factors, management, and prognosis of postoperative systemic complications. The results showed that the incidence of systemic complications was low, and most cases were mild and could be relieved through observation, symptomatic treatment, or specialist consultation. Patients with worse activities of daily living (ADL) and a history of diabetes mellitus (DM) should be given extra attention.

Summary: Post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is a common complication after heart transplant, sharing similarities with type 2 diabetes but also having specific causes. This study evaluated the incidence and risk factors of PTDM and studied its relationship with glucose metabolic alterations and heart transplant outcomes. The results showed that PTDM is closely related to BMI increase, metabolic syndrome development, and recipient survival.

Summary: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an effective treatment for older patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis, and its indication has expanded to younger patients at lower risk. Despite a decrease in thromboembolic and bleeding complications after TAVI, these adverse events are still common. Recommendations for antithrombotic therapy in patients undergoing TAVI are mainly based on expert opinion, while recent studies and trials provide updated insights on antithrombotic treatment during and after the procedure.
