Neurological Sequelae in Patients with COVID-19: A Histopathological Perspective

Francesco Fisicaro, Mario Di Napoli, Aldo Liberto, Martina Fanella, Flavio Di Stasio, Manuela Pennisi, Rita Bella, Giuseppe Lanza, Gelsomina Mansueto

Summary: The current research on the neuropathology of COVID-19 deceased patients is still limited, focusing on vascular-related and infection-related inflammatory tissue damage. However, it is currently unclear whether these findings are the result of direct viral pathology or the non-specific impact of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases on the brain.

Glycemic Gap Predicts in-Hospital Mortality in Diabetic Patients with Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Elaheh Zarean, Simona Lattanzi, Mehdi Azizmohammad Looha, Mario Di Napoli, Sherry H-Y Chou, Alibay Jafarli, Michel Torbey, Afshin A. Divani

Summary: The study evaluated the association between glycemic gap (GG) and in-hospital mortality in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). GG was found to be an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and showed better predictive performance in diabetic patients compared to admission glucose levels. Admission GG may serve as a useful prognostic biomarker for ICH patients with diabetes.

Multifactorial Landscape Parses to Reveal a Predictive Model for Knee Osteoarthritis

Monica Singh, Srishti Valecha, Rubanpal Khinda, Nitin Kumar, Surinderpal Singh, Pawan K. Juneja, Taranpal Kaur, Mario Di Napoli, Jatinder S. Minhas, Puneetpal Singh, Sarabjit Mastana

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether a combination of significant risk variables, pro-inflammatory markers, and candidate genes could serve as a predictive marker for knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The study identified higher BMI, triglycerides, poor sleep, IL-6, IL-1 beta, and hsCRP as independent predictors for KOA. Additionally, specific haplotypes within CRP, IL-6, VDR, and eNOS genes were found to impact KOA risk, further enhancing the predictive ability of the model.

Simona Lattanzi, Davide Norata, Afshin A. Divani, Mario Di Napoli, Serena Broggi, Chiara Rocchi, Santiago Ortega-Gutierrez, Gelsomina Mansueto, Mauro Silvestrini

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) and futile recanalization in patients with AIS. The study found that older age, higher admission National Institutes of Health stroke scale score, and higher admission SIRI increased the risk of poor outcomes at 3 months despite complete or near-complete recanalization.

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps and NLRP3 Inflammasome: A Disturbing Duo in Atherosclerosis, Inflammation and Atherothrombosis

Puneetpal Singh, Nitin Kumar, Monica Singh, Manminder Kaur, Gurjinderpal Singh, Amit Narang, Abhinav Kanwal, Kirti Sharma, Baani Singh, Mario Di Napoli, Sarabjit Mastana

Summary: Atherosclerosis is the formation of plaque within arteries, caused by the accumulation of fats, cholesterol, and fibrous material, leading to blockage of blood flow and ischemia. It has a significant impact on global health statistics, being the main cause of morbidity and mortality for diseases such as rheumatological, heart, and brain disorders. Inflammation and coagulatory mediators contribute to the development and worsening of atherosclerotic plaque, with neutrophil extracellular traps and NLRP3 playing a significant role in this process. This review focuses on the contribution of these two processes in atherosclerosis, inflammation, and atherothrombosis.

Monomeric C-reactive protein: A novel biomarker predicting neurodegenerative disease and vascular dysfunction

Ylenia Pastorello, Roxana O. Carare, Claudia Banescu, Lawrence Potempa, Mario Di Napoli, Mark Slevin

Summary: Circulating C-reactive protein (pCRP) concentrations significantly increase during acute and chronic infection and disease, playing a role in complement fixation. It is now known that pCRP dissociates into the monomeric form (mCRP) when exposed to activated immune cells or damaged tissue, becoming biologically active. Studies have shown that mCRP is distributed within the brain tissue of individuals with neuroinflammatory disease and has been linked to neurovascular dysfunction, blood brain barrier compromise, and increased risk of dementia. Future therapeutic options aim to inhibit pCRP-LPC mediated dissociation and prevent associated damage.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive update on the clinical assessment, diagnosis, complications, treatment, and follow-up of peripheral nervous system vasculitides (PNSV). Recent advancements in neuroimaging, molecular testing, and peripheral nerve biopsy have improved the clinical assessment and diagnostic accuracy of PNSV. The identification of specific morphological findings has improved the differentiation between systemic and non-systemic neuropathies, leading to more accurate diagnoses and proper management.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels and the severity and prognosis of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The results showed that serum ALP levels in ICH patients were significantly elevated and correlated with hematoma volume and Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score. High serum ALP levels may serve as a potential predictor for the severity and unfavorable prognosis of ICH.
