Summary: This study found that the percentage of locally advanced OPSCC undergoing surgery-based therapy has decreased in both HPV-positive and HPV-negative disease. Factors associated with surgery included younger age, health insurance, and treatment at academic centers.

Summary: The study identified delays in care for patients with non-human papillomavirus-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV(-)OPSCC). Visiting multiple providers and misdiagnosis prolonged the time to diagnosis. Improved patient and provider education is necessary to expedite the diagnosis of HPV(-)OPSCC.

Summary: This review discusses the therapeutic management of patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and the impact of HPV status on treatment selection. While HPV-positive and HPV-negative OPSCC are recognized as two distinct diseases, the influence of HPV status on treatment management remains unclear and controversial.

Summary: This study identified differences in tumor microenvironment (TME) associated with HPV infection in OPSCC, with enrichment of specific cell types in HPV+ and HPV- OPSCCs. By constructing a coexpression network, it was found that HPV+ OPSCCs exhibit elevated immune activities and suppressed extracellular matrix-related activities compared to HPV- OPSCCs. Clinical analysis showed that TME-relevant genes were closely linked to prognosis and therapy response in OPSCC, with results validated in an independent OPSCC cohort.

Summary: A study uses single-cell RNA sequencing to analyze human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive and -negative oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, discovering significant diversity within and between tumors. In HPV-positive tumors, subsets of malignant cells are identified with undetectable HPV expression and decreased HPV-related phenotypes, potentially impacting prognosis and therapeutic response.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the prognostic factors for patients with oropharyngeal HG-NEC and found that HPV infection and smoking were not significantly associated with survival outcomes. The study also found a high rate of distant recurrence in HG-NEC patients, suggesting the use of multimodality treatment including systemic therapy to improve prognosis.

Summary: In 2020, there were 98,421 cases of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCC) worldwide, with human papillomavirus (HPV) being recognized as the leading cause. This review conducted a literature review on the relationship between OPSCC and HPV, focusing on the clinical differences, prognosis, and treatment between HPV+ and HPV- OPSCC. It also analyzed various HPV diagnostic methods. By presenting key information in an organized and accessible way, this review helps healthcare professionals gain a better understanding of the HPV-OPSCC relationship and contributes to the prevention of various cancers caused by HPV, including oropharyngeal cancer.

Summary: This study explores the impact of HPV status on the prognosis of early-stage OPSCC patients and its influence on local treatment strategies. The results show that patients with HPV-positive diseases have better survival outcomes regardless of the local treatment strategy. Therefore, patients with early-stage OPSCC should be informed about the advantages and disadvantages of definitive radiotherapy or radical surgery.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence of second primary malignancies (SPM) among HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) patients who underwent surgery. The results showed a lower rate of SPM in this group, and adjuvant radiation was found to reduce the risk of SPM.

Summary: The study found that 37.0% of women with HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma had a history of HPV-related anogenital disease, with the cervix being the most common site. Among those with a history, 94.1% required procedures to diagnose or treat HPV lesions.

Summary: A machine learning model was developed and tested to classify the HPV status of OPSCC patients using 18F-FDG PET-derived parameters and an appropriate combination of machine learning methods. The model utilized PET parameters, clinical features, and their combination, and employed various techniques like feature transforms, feature selection, and oversampling for training. The model outperformed those using only PET or clinical parameters in predicting HPV status.
