One vital aspect of emergency medicine management is communication after episodes of care to improve future performance through group reflection on the shared experience. This reflective activity in teams is known as debriefing, and despite supportive evidence highlighting its benefits, many practitioners experience barriers to implementing debriefing in the clinical setting. The aim of this article is to review the current evidence supporting postevent debriefing and discuss practical approaches to implementing debriefing in the emergency department. We will address the who, what, when, where, why, and how of debriefing and provide a practical guide for the clinician to facilitate debriefing in the clinical environment.

Debriefing for Simulation-Based Medical Education A Survey From the International Network of Simulation-Based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education

Louise Ing, Adam Cheng, Yiqun Lin

Summary: This study investigates the current status of debriefing practice and faculty development for simulation educators in an international pediatric simulation network. The findings show variations in timing, duration, framework, and use of objective data in debriefing practice. While most participants have access to faculty development opportunities, barriers such as time and resource constraints still exist.

The impact of clinical result acquisition and interpretation on task performance during a simulated pediatric cardiac arrest: a multicentre observational study

Carol Rizkalla, Dailys Garcia-Jorda, Adam Cheng, Jonathan P. Duff, Ronald Gottesman, Matthew J. Weiss, Deanna A. Koot, Elaine Gilfoyle

Summary: This study investigated the impact of clinical result acquisition and interpretation by the team leader on critical task completion during simulated pediatric cardiac arrest. The study found that team training successfully reduced the time to perform key clinical tasks, but the behavior change of the leader did not affect the time taken to start CPR or defibrillate.

Faculty Development Approaches for Life Support Courses: A Scoping Review

Ying-Chih Ko, Ming-Ju Hsieh, Adam Cheng, Kasper G. Lauridsen, Taylor L. Sawyer, Farhan Bhanji, Robert Greif

Summary: This scoping review identified faculty development approaches to improve instructional competence in accredited life support courses. The interventions included instructor qualification/training, assessment tools, teaching skills enhancement, and additional courses for instructors. These interventions were associated with improved learning outcomes, teaching ability, and self-confidence of the instructors. It is recommended that local organizations implement faculty development programs for their teaching staff of their accredited resuscitation courses. Further research should focus on strengthening and maintaining instructor competency, as well as evaluating the cost-effectiveness of different faculty development strategies.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the association between rapid intravenous fluid (IVF) bolus administration rates in pediatric sepsis in the emergency department (ED) and clinical outcomes. The results showed that faster IVF bolus administration rates were associated with increased mortality, intubation, and non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV).

Blended learning for accredited life support courses - A systematic review

M. Elgohary, F. S. Palazzo, J. Breckwoldt, A. Cheng, J. Pellegrino, S. Schnaubelt, R. Greif, A. Lockey

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of blended learning compared to non-blended learning approaches for accredited life support courses. The results showed that blended learning is at least as effective as non-blended learning for participant satisfaction, knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Despite high set up costs, blended learning has the potential for cost reduction and eventual net profit. However, the certainty of evidence was very low, and further research is needed.
