Whether or not to change behavior depends not only on the personal success of each individual, but also on the success and/or behavior of others. Using this as motivation, we incorporate the impact of peer pressure into a susceptible-vaccinated-infected-recovered (SVIR) epidemiological model, where the propensity to adopt a particular vaccination strategy depends both on individual success as well as on the strategies of neighbors. We show that plugging into the peer pressure is a double-edged sword, which, on the one hand, strongly promotes vaccination when its cost is below a critical value, but, on the other hand, it can also strongly impede it if the critical value is exceeded. We explain this by revealing a facilitated cluster formation process that is induced by the peer pressure. Due to this, the vaccinated individuals are inclined to cluster together and therefore become unable to efficiently inhibit the spread of the infectious disease if the vaccination is costly. If vaccination is cheap, however, they reinforce each other in using it. Our results are robust to variations of the SVIR dynamics on different population structures. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2013

Effect of collective influence on the evolution of cooperation in evolutionary prisoner's dilemma games

Yajun Mao, Zhihai Rong, Zhi-Xi Wu

Summary: This study examines how individuals' diverse collective influence affects the evolution of cooperation in the evolutionary prisoner's dilemma game on scale-free networks. It suggests that influential cooperators at medium or small degrees are able to spread their behaviors more efficiently among neighbors, promoting the emergence of cooperation. The combination of time scale mechanism plays a crucial role in bridging the feedback between strategy-updating time scale and individual performance.

Optimal Organization of Functional Connectivity Networks for Segregation and Integration With Large-Scale Critical Dynamics in Human Brains

Xinchun Zhou, Ningning Ma, Benseng Song, Zhixi Wu, Guangyao Liu, Liwei Liu, Lianchun Yu, Jianfeng Feng

Summary: The optimal organization for functional segregation and integration in the brain is evident through the small-world feature of functional connectivity networks, supported by critical neural dynamics. The critical dynamics play a crucial role in forming an optimal organization of FC networks in the brain, potentially applicable to understanding abnormal FC configurations in neuropsychiatric disorders.

Critical thresholds of benefit distribution in an extended snowdrift game model

Bin-Quan Li, Zhi-Xi Wu, Jian-Yue Guan

Summary: This paper introduces an extended model based on the snowdrift game model to study the impact of inequality on the evolution of cooperation. The study finds that within the limited resource range, the larger the resource is, the larger the critical proportion of benefits that defectors can exploit. Inequality is stronger in social structures with sparse connections and weaker in those with dense connections. Introducing incentives and punishments makes it harder for cooperators to get a fair share of the profits.

Nonlinear mapping between continuous- and discrete-time dynamics

Liang Zhang, Chao-Ran Cai, Ji-Qiang Zhang, Xu-Sheng Liu, Chong-Yang Wang, Zhi-Xi Wu

Summary: Linear mapping is commonly used in dynamic modeling and empirical data analysis, but it is not effective when time intervals are large. This study proposes a theoretical framework that provides a nonlinear mapping between continuous and discrete-time dynamics by considering the coupling effects of multiple events. The effectiveness of the proposed mapping is verified using classical epidemic models.

Diversity-induced resonance in a globally coupled bistable system with diversely distributed heterogeneity

Cong Liu, Chong-Yang Wang, Zhi-Xi Wu, Han-Xin Yang, Jian-Yue Guan

Summary: This study reveals that a moderate degree of diversity can significantly enhance the collective response of coupled extended systems. It demonstrates that the standard deviation and the ratio of negative entities jointly modulate diversity-induced resonance, and the coexistence of negative and positive entities is a prerequisite for this resonant behavior.

Pedestrian counterflow in a floor field cellular automaton model coupled with an evolutionary game

Ze-Hao Chen, Zhi-Xi Wu, Jian-Yue Guan

Summary: In this study, a floor field cellular automaton model is used to investigate the bidirectional pedestrian flow in a straight corridor. A game-theoretical framework is introduced to handle conflicts between pedestrians, where they can act as cooperators or defectors depending on their responses to conflicts. The study explores the effects of different parameters (delta, corridor width, anticipation floor field parameter) on pedestrian dynamics and identifies resonance-like behavior in average separation time. The research provides valuable insights into lane formation, jam dissolution, and the design of efficient policies for pedestrian flow.

Alternating rotation of coordinated and anti-coordinated action due to environmental feedback and noise

Bin-Quan Li, Zhi-Xi Wu, Jian-Yue Guan

Summary: This paper describes the phenomenon of alternating rotation of coordinated and anti-coordinated behaviors using environmental feedback dynamics, and derives the conditions for the stability of these behaviors. The research findings suggest that stochastic noise plays a crucial role in the alternating rotation phenomenon.

Small world can alleviate the social dilemmas originating from self-regulation or community policing issues

Peng-Bi Cui, Zhi-Xi Wu, Tao Zhou

Summary: Self-regulation and government regulation, community policing and external powerful forces are vital components of the global economy and social management. The implementation of self-regulation or community policing requires disciplined members, while government or external forces are more likely to intervene. Addressing both dilemmas and supporting altruistic individuals remains a significant challenge.

An Open-Circuit Fault Diagnosis Method for Four-Wire T-Type Three-Level Rectifier

Zhixi Wu, Jiajiang Sun, Yujin Song, Jin Zhao

Summary: A novel open-circuit fault diagnosis method for the four-wire T-type three-level rectifier (four-wire 3LT(2)R) is proposed in this article, considering power factor regulation. The diagnostic method is designed based on the deep analysis of the relationship between the power factor and the working interval of the transistor. The faults with different features related to the size of working intervals are detected using the zero current in each phase current, and the fault transistor is located according to the polarities of the currents and the modulated voltages, without additional sensors.
