Summary: A retrospective analysis of 346 patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who underwent surgery revealed that MRI findings, specific etiologies, and seizures induced by electrical stimulation were significantly correlated with seizure outcomes. Further research indicated that seizure induction by low frequency electrical stimulation could serve as a positive predictive factor for favorable seizure outcomes post-surgery.

Summary: This study evaluated the risk of seizures in patients following resection of brain metastases from solid tumors. The progression of brain metastases and incomplete resection were found to be risk factors for seizures.

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors for 30-day mortality after outpatient surgery and found that age, cancer, and functional health status were associated with an increased risk. Postoperative complications had a greater impact on mortality than preoperative variables, and there was a higher risk of death for patients over 80 years of age. We recommend considering inpatient surgery for patients aged over 80 with cancer, poor functional health status, or a higher ASA class.

Summary: The study found that patients with diastolic dysfunction after cardiac surgery had higher rates of overall morbidity, including higher postoperative morbidity scores, longer durations of intubation, and longer stays in the ICU.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the incidence and severity of psychiatric and behavioural side effects associated with Perampanel use in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy versus other focal epilepsies. The study found no significant difference in terms of these side effects between the two groups.

Summary: The study found that racial minorities tend to lose less weight than Non-Hispanic white patients after bariatric surgery, with no clear association between race and resolution of obesity-related co-morbidities. More prospective, robust, long-term studies are needed to understand the impacts of race on bariatric surgery outcomes.

Summary: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a common form of epilepsy, and about 30% of patients have drug-resistant seizures. This study evaluated the seizure outcomes of patients with drug-refractory TLE who underwent resective temporal lobe surgery (rTLS), finding that the lack of MRI lesions and placement of depth electrodes before surgery were associated with unfavorable postsurgical seizure outcomes.

Summary: A retrospective analysis shows that the use of conventional ultrafiltration in cardiac surgery does not reduce postoperative pulmonary complications or improve early pulmonary function. The incidence of the composite primary outcome was higher in the ultrafiltration group, and more transfusions were required.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between PTSD, psychiatric co-morbidity and PTG among Chinese adolescents. The results showed that domains of each construct mainly clustered within their respective communities, and highlighted the roles of bridging nodes and edges. Negative alterations in cognitions and mood, anxiety and insomnia, and appreciation of life were identified as key bridging nodes for PTSD, psychiatric co-morbidity, and PTG, respectively.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of postoperative morbidity on tumor recurrence and mortality in patients with HCCA following curative resection. The results showed that postoperative morbidity is associated with decreased overall survival and recurrence-free survival, especially in cases of major morbidity.

Summary: The study evaluated the decline in visual object naming in drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy patients after dominant temporal lobe resection according to the resection status of the basal temporal language area identified by cortical stimulation during stereoelectroencephalography. The results showed that resection of the basal temporal language area was associated with specific and early naming decline, with BTLA+ patients experiencing lower naming scores compared to their baseline even in the long run. Seamless mapping helps predict postoperative language outcomes after dominant temporal lobe resection.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of seizure semiology, EEG features, and MRI changes on localization and surgical prognosis in children with epileptic spasm. The results showed that MRI was effective in identifying lesions and surgical treatment had good outcomes in most patients.

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors associated with morbidity after simultaneous resection of colorectal liver metastases (CLM) and primary colorectal cancers (CRC). The results showed that prolonged operative time is independently associated with severe complications. Awareness of cumulative operative time may inform intraoperative decision-making by surgical teams.

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence, psychiatric co-morbidity, and annual costs associated with epilepsy in Denmark. The results showed an epilepsy prevalence of 0.67%, with 37.4% of epilepsy patients having a psychiatric disorder or using drugs for psychiatric disorders. The estimated annual individual net costs associated with epilepsy were €30,683.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing surgery for gastroduodenal perforation. The analysis of 273 adult patients revealed that general condition, preoperative hemoglobin level, preoperative creatinine level, intake of preoperative steroids, perforation localization, age, and preoperative CRP level were independent risk factors for different outcomes.
