Summary: Women with bipolar disorder are at high risk of recurrence during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and experiencing mania/psychosis during pregnancy further increases the risk of postpartum mania/psychosis in this high-risk group. These findings may have important implications for predicting and managing severe postpartum recurrence of bipolar disorder.

Summary: This study aims to explore the perceptions and experiences of schizophrenia from patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, spiritual and traditional healers in Pakistan, in order to develop a community-based intervention for improving treatment adherence. The findings highlight that schizophrenia is not solely a biomedical problem, but influenced by poverty and social disparity. Spiritual and traditional healing methods are seen as integral to the well-being and rehabilitation of schizophrenia patients. The lack of mental health services, training, and necessary medication in primary care is identified as a major issue. Barriers to community-based interventions include multiple pressures on staff, lack of incentives, non-availability of medication, and lack of formal referral pathways.

Summary: The new paradigms of psychiatric disorders pathogenesis are inclined towards chronic inflammation, affecting neuronal networks. Inflammation is strongly associated with depression and mediated by toll-like receptors (TLRs) in neurobiology. TLRs and their signaling pathways play a key role in immune regulation to stress and infections. This review summarizes the role of TLRs in psychotic disorders and acquired epilepsy, as well as their potential in immune response mediated through antidepressant therapies and TLRs polymorphism associated with various psychiatric disorders.

Summary: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, is a systemic illness that affects multiple organs in patients. An early symptom of infection is anosmia or lack of smell, indicating the involvement of the olfactory bulb in COVID-19 disease. Little is currently known about how SARS-CoV-2 affects neurological or psychological symptoms. This systemic review explores the pathways involved in coronavirus infection and their impact on mental health.

Summary: Although hallucinations are often studied in terms of prevalence and their associations with psychopathology and functional impairment, little is known about hallucinations in sensory modalities other than auditory. This study examined the incidence, course, and risk factors of hallucinatory experiences across different modalities in two general population cohorts using similar methodology.

Summary: Symptoms play a vital role in understanding and diagnosing disorders, serving as both diagnostic tools and important entities themselves. Diagnosis serves as the international communication method in many clinical disciplines, providing essential knowledge about the natural history and treatment of psychopathology. Investigating the nature and meaning of symptoms can be helpful in identifying emerging disorders.

Summary: The study found significant differences in gut microbiota composition between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, as well as variations in response to antipsychotic medications and exposure to different classes of drugs. This suggests that the composition of gut microbiota could serve as a biomarker for schizophrenia and treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

Summary: There is a substantial proportion of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) who suffer from pathological dissociation. This study investigated the prevalence of dissociative disorders and symptoms among patients with SSDs and found that over 60% of participants exhibited pathological dissociation. Clinical assessment should include measures of dissociation to facilitate early identification.

Summary: The aim of this study was to systematically review the evidence regarding the relation of obesity and psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence. A total of 14 studies of 23,442 children and adolescents that investigated the relation of obesity with anxiety, mood disorders, and psychosis were included in this systematic review. Nine of the included studies reported a significant relationship between the psychiatric disorder under investigation and obesity. Understanding the nexus between obesity and psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents is of great importance, given the alarming increase in both conditions in youth. Such findings could facilitate the development and implementation of targeted interventions.
