Summary: The study aimed to monitor the surface water quality of four study sites in the Lower Parana River Basin, Argentina, using physicochemical and ecotoxicological indicators. Results showed varying water quality across sites, with pollutants causing detrimental effects on the native amphibian population in the region.

Summary: Since the end of World War II, the release of radionuclides by humans has been a global issue. Although the probability of their impact on human activities is low, their potential social and economic consequences are tremendous. Understanding the physicochemical speciation of radionuclides is crucial for assessing their impacts on the environment and biological systems. In this study, a marine model ecosystem was used to investigate the accumulation mechanism of cobalt in sea urchins, and the main protein responsible for its complexation was identified.

Summary: Sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus harvested from different habitats in Sardinia showed variations in fatty acid composition, with the ability to accumulate lipids in their gut contents and selectively store EPA and ARA. Consumption of green algae, particularly C. cylindracea, may influence the levels of EPA and ARA in gonads.

Summary: The study found that chemicals leached from plastic particles have severe impacts on the development of marine organisms, leading to developmental abnormalities. These findings suggest that microplastic pollution may have unknown negative effects on ecosystems.

Summary: This study assessed the toxic effects of three innovative bioplastic products on sea urchin larvae. The results showed that PVC toy was the most toxic material, PHB had slight toxicity, and PLA cups and PLA / PHA filament were innocuous. The presence of additives in bioplastics should be carefully addressed to ensure their safety.

Summary: This study examines the impact of ecotoxicological tools on the assessment of estuarine ecological status. By using a battery of in-situ bioassays and biomarkers, along with measurements of heavy metal concentrations in sediments and water, we demonstrate that interpreting all indicators together enables a more holistic description of water quality status and identifies limiting factors.

Summary: The study reported the presence and biodistribution of PFOA in sea urchins from two contaminated sites along Palermo's coastline. PFOA concentrations were found to be bioaccumulative, with significantly different levels observed between specimens collected from the two sites. This suggests the potential use of Paracentrotus lividus as a sentinel species for PFOA biomonitoring.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of vanadium on sea urchin embryo development and proteolytic activity of gelatinases. The results showed that vanadium exposure caused morphological aberrations, reduced embryonic cell distribution, and altered embryo volume. Additionally, vanadium affected the expression and activity of gelatinases, particularly MMP-14. These findings suggest that an integrated approach combining morphology, proteolytic activity, and MMP-14 expression is important for studying the effects of vanadium.

Summary: Reviewing scientific literature on laboratory testing with spiked sediments, researchers investigate the impact of factors such as sediment type, handling procedures, solvent carrier, mixing method, and equilibration time on the experimental results. The study finds that the choice of test species, testing procedures, and physicochemical properties of the contaminant are the primary factors determining the selection of substrate type, sediment handling procedures, solvent carrier, and mixing method.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of traffic-related runoff overflow on metal concentrations in sediment and Gammarus sp. downstream of the RRB outfall in the receiving stream. The results showed that overflow of the RRB leads to increased metal concentrations in sediment and biota of the stream.
