Summary: Androgen prohormones, such as DHEA, increase in early puberty, peak in the second and third decade, and decline thereafter. Studies have examined the potential benefits of DHEA therapy in various hormone-deficient states and in normal women. The data support small benefits in quality of life and mood for women with hormone deficiencies, but not for anxiety or sexual function. However, no consistent beneficial effects have been observed in menopausal symptoms, sexual function, cognition, or overall wellbeing in normal women. Local administration of DHEA may be beneficial for vulvovaginal atrophy, but caution is advised for long-term use due to the risks of androgenic and estrogenic side effects.

Summary: 17 beta-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type1 (HSD17B1) is responsible for converting estrone to estradiol. HSD17B1 was found to be expressed only in the human placenta, while the SP1 site in the promoter region of the HSD17B1 gene was conserved across species. However, in the ovine placenta, this SP1 site was completely methylated. HSD17B1 in humans had high activity for testosterone production, similar to other species, and the significance of placental HSD17B1 expression was discussed based on this.

Summary: High-throughput sample preparation is crucial in clinical mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. A method using Fe3O4@UiO-66 as sorbent for simultaneous determination of testosterone (T) and androstenedione (4-AD) in serum samples was developed, showing good linearity and high recoveries. Fe3O4@UiO-66 was proven to be an ideal sorbent for androgens extraction, making the method reliable for high-throughput quantitation in clinical applications.

Summary: The study reports the synthesis of two isomeric testosterone dimers and an androstenedione dimer, utilizing an efficient transformation leading to the formation of key diene. The most active dimer was found to be composed of natural testosterone, exhibiting significant inhibitory effects on androgen-dependent prostate cancer cells.

Summary: Although androgens and estrogens are not considered hormones in plants, they are physiologically active and can regulate various processes in plant growth and development, as well as the interaction of plants with their environment. This review discusses the progress made in understanding the presence and physiological activity of these mammalian steroid hormones in plants over the past two decades.

Summary: Urine marking, aggression, and other behavioral concerns are common reasons for cat owners to seek veterinary care. Sex-hormone secreting adrenal tumors may be an under-recognized syndrome that can contribute to these behavioral issues. A detailed physical examination and consideration of endocrine disturbances can provide more accurate diagnosis and treatment for cats undergoing evaluation for inappropriate urination or aggression.

Summary: The role of estrogens and progesterone in endometrial cancer is well-known, but there is limited information about the role of androgens. Five different androgens are produced in women: DHEAS, DHEA, A(4), T, and DHT. T and DHT are the most potent hormones, with DHT mainly produced from T in peripheral tissues including the endometrium. While androgens are generally considered to have anti-proliferative effects and their receptor expression is associated with a good prognosis in endometrial cancer, it is still unclear in which specific conditions androgens have carcinogenic or protective effects in endometrial cancer.

Summary: Liquid Chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is the preferred method for androgen analysis in biological fluids due to its high selectivity. Using derivatization approaches with hydrazine-based reagents, particularly 2-hydrazino-1-methylpyridine (HMP), enhances sensitivity for analysis of low plasma volumes. Chromatographic separation and careful analysis show that HMP derivatives offer higher sensitivity compared to HTP derivatives.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that 11oxygenated androgens may play a potential role in human reproductive function. The concentrations of 11keto androgens in women and children are comparable to testosterone, while 11hydroxy androgens have minimal or no androgenic bioactivity. These findings are important for understanding the role of androgens in different populations.

Summary: In this study, the conversion efficiency of TES and ASD by CYP154C2 was efficiently enhanced with high regio- and stereoselectivity through crystal structure analysis and structure-guided rational design. These results provide an effective strategy and theoretical basis for the 2 alpha-hydroxylation of steroids, and the structure-guided rational design of P450s should facilitate P450 applications in the biosynthesis of steroid drugs.

Summary: Stromal tissue is crucial for providing structural support and promoting early follicular growth in the ovary through bi-directional signaling. Estradiol enhances androgen production in ovarian stromal cells by increasing the abundance of steroidogenic enzymes and proteins. This study lays the foundation for further exploring steroidogenesis regulation and feedback mechanisms in ovarian stromal cells associated with estradiol.

Summary: This study comprehensively reviewed the evidence on the impact of testosterone on human mating and parenting behaviors. The findings suggest that basal testosterone levels are related to mating and parenting behaviors in both men and women. Testosterone responds to reproduction-relevant cues and acute changes in testosterone levels are associated with subsequent mating and parenting behaviors. Single-dose exogenous testosterone administration may causally affect mating and parenting behaviors. However, the support for trade-off interpretations of testosterone's adaptive function is mixed, indicating that the role of testosterone in modulating human mating and parenting is complex and context-dependent.

Summary: This study used frozen stored porbeagle muscle tissues to analyze the relationship between testosterone and estradiol concentrations and maturity and reproductive stage. The results suggest that muscle hormone concentrations have the potential to serve as a non-lethal indicator of reproductive stage in oophagous sharks. The study also highlights the value of specimen sharing and continued use of stored vertebral muscle tissue for reproductive hormone analysis to maximize data obtained from biological samples. These methods would be particularly valuable for research on threatened species.

Summary: The use of agro pesticides and fertilizers has been shown to negatively impact the health of male farmers in the Buea Subdivision of Cameroon, with inadequate protective measures leading to various health issues, including reproductive health problems. It is necessary to raise awareness among farmers about the use of protective equipment to mitigate these health hazards.
