This paper describes an experimental design technique for the modification of volcanic ash with Fenton reagent (FMVA) to be used as a natural adsorbent in the removal of As(III) and As(V) from aqueous solution. The influence of pH, contact time and Fe2+/H2O2 on arsenic removal by the modified volcanic ash was investigated. It was observed that the arsenic removal efficiency was influenced by two of these parameters. The Fe2+/H2O2 ratio is an important factor that affects both As(III) and As(V) adsorption (P = 0.000). The pH affects As(V) adsorption (P = 0.003) more significantly than As(III) adsorption (P = 0.02). It was observed that the maximum As(III) adsorption by the FMVA was obtained at pH 2, Fe+2/H2O2 = 0.06 and 30 min of contact time (39 mu g As(III) per mg FMVA), whereas the maximum As(V) adsorption was obtained under the conditions of pH 5, Fe+2/H2O2 = 0.06 and 30 min of contact time (41 mu g As(V) per mg FMVA).

Hybrid Sono-photocatalytic degradation of Acid Brown 14 Using Persulphate and ZnO Nanoparticles: Feasibility and kinetic Study

Maryam Hasanzadeh, Sahand Jorfi, Mehdi Ahmadi, Neemat Jaafarzadeh

Summary: The degradation of acid brown 14 (AB14) using ultrasound/ultraviolet for the heterogeneous activation of persulphate and ZnO nanoparticle was studied. The experimental results showed that the highest removal efficiency of AB14 was achieved at high persulphate concentration, acidic pH, low initial dye concentration, and simultaneous ultrasound/ultraviolet irradiations with the presence of ZnO. The kinetic study indicated that the second-order kinetic model provided the best fit for the experimental data. The scavenging test revealed that sulphate radicals were the dominant species during AB14 degradation. This process demonstrated efficient removal of organic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Bisphenol A degradation by peroxymonosulfate photo-activation coupled with carbon-based cobalt ferrite nanocomposite: Performance, upgrading synergy and mechanistic pathway

Babak Kakavandi, Saba Alavi, Farshid Ghanbari, Mehdi Ahmadi

Summary: Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles anchored on multiwalled carbon nanotubes were used to synthesize a nanocomposite for enhanced catalytic activity towards the degradation of bisphenol A through photo-activated peroxymonosulfate. The combination of catalyst, UV light, and PMS showed a significant synergy in the degradation of BPA, exhibiting high removal efficiencies within a short reaction time. The presence of radical mechanisms and stable leaching of metal ions confirmed the potential of this method for efficient treatment of BPA-contaminated water.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) are widespread contaminants and their impact on human health is still uncertain but of increasing interest in the scientific community. This study investigated MP contamination in soils from Hormoz Island, Iran and spices made from these soils. Fibres of various types of plastics were detected in the soils and composite spice, with the highest concentration found in the spice (0.1 MP g(-1)). Geophagy, the ingestion of contaminated soil and dirt, could be a significant means of MP exposure for humans and animals.

Summary: The study reports trends in injury-related mortality and morbidity among adolescents aged 10-24 years over the past three decades. In 2019, transport and unintentional injuries combined accounted for a significant number of deaths and DALYs among adolescents. While global mortality rates for both types of injuries declined, there was an increase in deaths in low-SDI countries. In high-SDI countries, there was a reduction in transport injury DALYs but little change in unintentional injury DALYs from 2010 to 2019.

Paraquat induced oxidative stress, DNA damage, and cytotoxicity in lymphocytes

Soheila Alizadeh, Gholamreza Anani-sarab, Hoda Amiri, Majid Hashemi

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of paraquat on oxidative stress, DNA damage, and cytotoxicity in peripheral lymphocyte cells, as well as pathological changes in various tissues. The results showed that higher doses of paraquat caused more severe damage to DNA and cell membranes, but gradual exposure to higher doses resulted in reduced damage, possibly due to the activation of antioxidant defense mechanisms.
