Exploring Coumarin-Based Boron Emissive Complexes as Temperature Thermometers in Polymer-Supported Materials

Goncalo Pedro, Frederico Duarte, Dmitrii A. Cheptsov, Nikita Yu. Volodin, Ivan V. Ivanov, Hugo M. Santos, Jose Luis Capelo-Martinez, Cristian Cuerva, Elisabete Oliveira, Valerii F. Traven, Carlos Lodeiro

Summary: Three coumarin-based boron complexes (L1, L2 and L3) were successfully incorporated into polymeric matrixes for temperature probes, showing high fluorescence quantum yield in solution and positive solvatochromism. L1 exhibited a colour change and quenching in emission intensity in the presence of anions due to deprotonation. The dye@doped polymers of L1, L2 and L3 showed excellent fluorescent response and reversibility as temperature sensors.

Development of New Targeted Nanotherapy Combined with Magneto-Fluorescent Nanoparticles against Colorectal Cancer

Goncalo A. Marcelo, David Montpeyo, Joana Galhano, Ramon Martinez-Manez, Jose Luis Capelo-Martinez, Julia Lorenzo, Carlos Lodeiro, Elisabete Oliveira

Summary: In this study, a combinatory antitumoral nanotherapy was developed using magneto-fluorescent nanoparticles as carriers for a combination of two drugs (doxorubicin and ofloxacin) and surface modification with two targeting agents (AZM-SH and Cetuximab). The results showed that the nanoparticles modified with AZM-SH had higher cellular uptake than those modified with Cetuximab, making them more effective for colorectal cancer cells. Furthermore, the oral administration of the nanoparticles with an enteric coating was successfully achieved under extreme conditions.

Enhancing water sensing via aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and solvatofluorochromic studies using two new dansyl derivatives containing a disulfide bound: Pollutant metal ions detection and preparation of water-soluble fluorescent polymeric particles

Frederico Duarte, Georgi Dobrikov, Atanas Kurutos, Hugo M. Santos, Javier Fernandez-Lodeiro, Jose Luis Capelo-Martinez, Elisabete Oliveira, Carlos Lodeiro

Summary: Polarity-sensitive dansyl derivatives L1 and L2 were synthesized and their ability to sense pollutant metal ions was investigated. Both L1 and L2 exhibited high sensitivity towards Cu2+ and Hg2+ metal ions, with L2 capable of detecting and quantifying Hg2+ concentrations as low as 2.5 μM. Additionally, both compounds showed positive sol-vatofluorochromic behavior, modulated in the presence of water, leading to fluorescence enhancement through aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Luminescent L1-based polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene (SBS) microparticles were successfully prepared, demonstrating the potential applications of dansyl-derivatives in biomedicine and environmental fields.

Mesomorphism and luminescence in coordination compounds and ionic salts based on pyridine-functionalized fl-diketones. Influence of the pyridine nitrogen position

Carlos Martinez-Ceberio, M. Carmen Torralba, Frederico Duarte, Santiago Herrero, Mercedes Cano, Carlos Lodeiro, Cristian Cuerva

Summary: Two new families of compounds with mesomorphic and luminescent behaviors were obtained using pyridine-functionalized fl-diketones as building blocks. The coordination of the fl-diketones to metal centers allowed the synthesis of neutral coordination compounds and cationic species. Protonation of the pyridine moiety yielded a novel series of pyridinium ionic salts. The nature of the complexes, fl-diketone ligands, and metal center greatly influenced the mesomorphic behavior and luminescence properties.

Development of fluorochromic polymer doped materials as platforms for temperature sensing using three dansyl derivatives bearing a sulfur bridge

Frederico Duarte, Georgi Dobrikov, Atanas Kurutos, Jose Luis Capelo-Martinez, Hugo M. Santos, Elisabete Oliveira, Carlos Lodeiro

Summary: Three novel bis-dansyl derivatives with a sulfur bridge were synthesized and their photophysical properties were studied in solution and in the solid state. The compounds exhibited fluorescence emission with quantum yields up to 60%, which depended on the solvent and molecular structure. Positive solvatofluorochromic behavior was observed, with emission ranging from bluish-green to yellow. The compounds showed high sensitivity to Cu2+ and Hg2+ ions, and one compound (L2) could detect and quantify up to 4 μM of Hg2+. Polymer thin films were fabricated to establish a linear relationship between emission and temperature, suggesting the potential application of these compounds as molecular thermometers.

Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Branched Bimetallic AuPd Nanoparticles with a Highly Tunable Optical Response

Silvia Nuti, Adriaïn Fernandez-Lodeiro, Lidia E. Chinchilla, Ana B. Hungria, Jose-Luis Capelo-Martinez, Carlos Lodeiro, Javier Fernandez-Lodeiro

Summary: This study presents a simple method for fabricating Au@Pd bimetallic branched nanoparticles, which allow for tunable optical response, using polyallylamine-stabilized branched AuNPs as template cores for Pd overgrowth. The concentration of PdCl4(2-) and ascorbic acid (AA) can be manipulated to alter the palladium content, enabling the growth of a Pd shell up to approximately 2 nm thick. The presence of palladium on the surface of gold nanoparticles enhances their catalytic properties, as demonstrated through a comparison of nanoenzymatic activity.

Carlos Fernandez-Lodeiro, Reem Tambosi, Javier Fernandez-Lodeiro, Adrian Fernandez-Lodeiro, Silvia Nuti, Soufian Ouchane, Nouari Kebaili, Jorge Perez-Juste, Isabel Pastoriza-Santos, Carlos Lodeiro

Summary: In this study, a novel approach for silica coating of silver nanoparticles using adenosine monophosphate (AMP) surface modification was proposed. The thickness of the silica coating could be tightly adjusted by varying the silica precursor or CTAC concentration. The study also revealed the influence of silica coating on the antimicrobial effect of AgNPs and investigated different bacterial growth conditions.
