Sea Spray Aerosol (SSA) as a Source of Perfluoroalkyl Acids (PFAAs) to the Atmosphere: Field Evidence from Long-Term Air Monitoring

Bo Sha, Jana H. Johansson, Peter Tunved, Pernilla Bohlin-Nizzetto, Ian T. Cousins, Matthew E. Salter

Summary: The effective enrichment of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in sea spray aerosols demonstrated in laboratory studies suggests that sea spray aerosols could be a potential source of PFAAs to the atmosphere. A field study in coastal areas of Norway found significant correlations between the sea spray aerosol tracer ion Na+ and PFAA concentrations, indicating sea spray aerosols as an important source of atmospheric PFAAs in coastal regions. The correlations were stronger in samples from Andoya, which is closer to open water and further away from urban areas compared to Birkenes.

Information Requirements under the Essential-Use Concept: PFA Case Studies

Juliane Gluge, Rachel London, Ian T. Cousins, Jamie DeWitt, Gretta Goldenman, Dorte Herzke, Rainer Lohmann, Mark Miller, Carla A. Ng, Sharyle Patton, Xenia Trier, Zhanyun Wang, Martin Scheringer

Summary: The study reveals that there are diverse uses of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), with limited information on alternatives. PFAS in consumer products can be easily replaced, while their uses in industrial processes require thorough evaluation. It is necessary to enhance coordination among stakeholders to ensure a transparent and coordinated phase-out of PFAS.

Combined Use of Total Fluorine and Oxidative Fingerprinting for Quantitative Determination of Side-Chain Fluorinated Polymers in Textiles

Ioannis Liagkouridis, Raed Awad, Steffen Schellenberger, Merle M. Plassmann, Ian T. Cousins, Jonathan P. Benskin

Summary: This article presents a new method for comprehensive characterization of side-chain fluorinated polymers (SFPs), which utilizes the total oxidizable precursor assay for structural elucidation and combustion ion chromatography for quantification. The method allows for quantitative determination of SFPs in units of side chain mass and estimation of PFAA degradation products.

An Outdoor Aging Study to Investigate the Release of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) from Functional Textiles

Steffen Schellenberger, Ioannis Liagkouridis, Raed Awad, Stuart Khan, Merle Plassmann, Gregory Peters, Jonathan P. Benskin, Ian T. Cousins

Summary: The emission of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from functional textiles was investigated through an outdoor weathering experiment. It was found that the textiles released low molecular weight PFAS substances after continuous exposure to natural stressors, and the color and water repellency of the textiles were also affected.

The essential-use concept: a valuable tool to guide decision-making on applications for authorisation under REACH?

Romain Figuiere, Flora Borchert, Ian T. Cousins, Marlene agerstrand

Summary: The purpose of the study is to investigate whether changes in the legal text and information required in an application for authorisation are needed to implement the essential-use concept. The results suggest that no fundamental changes are needed and applicants already provide sufficient information. If the risk related to the use is adequately controlled, it is not legally justified for the European Commission to refuse authorisation by arguing non-essential use.

Horizontal and Vertical Distribution of Perfluoroalkyl Acids (PFAAs) in the Water Column of the Atlantic Ocean

Eleni K. Savvidou, Bo Sha, Matthew E. Salter, Ian T. Cousins, Jana H. Johansson

Summary: PFAAs are widespread in the oceans, but there is limited knowledge about their vertical distribution and fate. This study measured the concentrations of PFAAs in surface and deep ocean waters and found that PFAA input comes from the Mediterranean Sea and the English Channel. Higher PFAA levels were observed at the eastern edge of the Northern Atlantic Subtropical Gyre, indicating the accumulation of persistent contaminants in ocean gyres. PFAA concentrations generally decreased with distance from the coast and increasing depth, and longer-chain PFAAs were more prevalent in intermediate depths due to their stronger sorption to organic matter.

Managing PMT/vPvM substances in consumer products through the concepts of essential-use and functional substitution: a case-study for cosmetics

Joanke van Dijk, Romain Figuiere, Stefan C. Dekker, Annemarie P. van Wezel, Ian T. Cousins

Summary: Measures are needed to protect water sources from PMT/vPvM substances. A study found that 6.4% of cosmetic products in the European market contain PMT/vPvM substances, with hair care products having the highest occurrence. Through case-studies, it was determined that all uses of PMT/vPvM substances are non-essential and should be phased out.

Lithium-ion battery recycling: a source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to the environment?

Amanda Rensmo, Eleni K. Savvidou, Ian T. Cousins, Xianfeng Hu, Steffen Schellenberger, Jonathan P. Benskin

Summary: Recycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is vital for meeting the increasing demand for metals and achieving a sustainable circular economy. However, there is limited knowledge about the environmental risks associated with LIB recycling, particularly the emission of persistent fluorinated substances. This study provides an overview of the use of fluorinated substances in LIBs and highlights the potential formation and release of persistent fluorinated substances during the recycling process. It calls for further investigation and suggests the substitution of PFAS-based materials or changes in process conditions to prevent the formation and emission of persistent fluorinated substances.

Identification and quantification of fluorinated polymers in consumer products by combustion ion chromatography and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Lisa Skedung, Eleni Savvidou, Steffen Schellenberger, Anders Reimann, Ian T. Cousins, Jonathan P. Benskin

Summary: In this study, the fluorine concentration in different consumer products on the Swedish market, which were suspected to contain fluorinated polymers, was determined. A qualitative pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (pyr-GC/MS) method was validated to identify the structure of organic fluorine. The study revealed that some samples contained high levels of inorganic fluorine.

Summary: Pollution caused by chemicals and waste, along with climate change and biodiversity loss, poses a triple planetary crisis. In response, countries have established an intergovernmental science-policy panel to address chemicals, waste, and pollution prevention. Protecting this panel from conflicts of interest is crucial for its success.

Probing the impact of a phytoplankton bloom on the chemistry of nascent sea spray aerosol using high-resolution mass spectrometry

Nikola Radoman, Sigurd Christiansen, Jana H. Johansson, Jeffrey A. Hawkes, Merete Bilde, Ian T. Cousins, Matthew E. Salter

Summary: Sea spray aerosol is a major natural source of aerosol in the Earth's atmosphere, but its impact on the Earth's radiation budget is uncertain due to a lack of understanding of its composition. This study investigated the composition of sea spray aerosol during a phytoplankton bloom in the North Atlantic and found that the aerosol became enriched in surface-active organic substances as the bloom progressed.
