Fiber reinforced composites have been used in several applications for several years and the market is continuously growing. It is known that the addition of fibers for reinforcing of matrix has advantages, especially the mechanical properties of the composites. Environmental and economic concerns are stimulating new research in the development of sustainable fiber for reinforcing polymer matrix. Particularly attractive are new materials in which a good part is based on natural and renewable resources, hence aggravating the environmental concerns that may result in the depletion and dwindling of wood resources from forest. This assessment report provides detailed world production of natural fiber and the inherent looming danger envisaged if attention is not shifted from its continuous usage. It has been stated that natural fibers are renewable and sustainable, but they are in fact, neither i.e. living plants are renewable and sustainable, from which natural fibers are taken, but not the fibers themselves. The US market reports that the composite market was 2.7 billion pounds sterling in 2006 and it is estimated to reach 3.3 billion pound sterling by 2012 with a 3.3% annual growth. Natural fiber market in the US experienced a 13% growth rate (275 million kilograms) between 1994 and 2004 and the demand for the natural fibers continues to rise. The average global annual market growth for natural fibers between 2003 and 2007 was 38%, while Europe saw the highest annual growth rate of 48%. This market was estimated at 0.36 million metric ton in 2007 and it is expected to reach 3.45 million metric ton in 2020. Fiber reinforced market is a multibillion dollar business and the natural fiber composites take a fair part of it.

Effect of Borophene and Graphene on the Elastic Modulus of PEDOT:PSS Film-A Finite Element Study

Gbolahan Joseph Adekoya, Oluwasegun Chijioke Adekoya, Emmanuel Rotimi Sadiku, Yskandar Hamam, Suprakas Sinha Ray

Summary: In this study, the interaction between borophene nanoplatelets (BNPs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the mechanical properties of Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film was investigated using a finite element method (FEM). The results showed that the elastic moduli of the nanocomposites improved by 9.6% and 10.2%, respectively. This research provides valuable insights into enhancing the mechanical stability of PEDOT:PSS electrodes.

Spark Plasma Sintering of Copper-Niobium-Graphite Composites, and the Investigations of Their Microstructure and Properties

Azunna Agwo Eze, Emmanuel Rotimi Sadiku, Williams Kehinde Kupolati, Julius Musyoka Ndambuki, Jacques Snyman, Idowu David Ibrahim

Summary: The microstructures and properties of copper-niobium-graphite composites produced via spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique were investigated for their potential use as electrical connection materials at high-temperature application. The addition of nano and micron particles sizes of Nb powders in the composites was compared, and the composites sintered at 650 degrees C showed good thermal stabilities, low coefficient of friction, and suitable corrosion resistance, meeting the requirements for electrical contacting materials.

Fabrication and Model Characterization of the Electrical Conductivity of PVA/PPy/rGO Nanocomposite

Oladipo Folorunso, Moses Oluwafemi Onibonoje, Yskandar Hamam, Rotimi Sadiku, Suprakas Sinha Ray

Summary: This study focuses on the fabrication of a hybrid polymer nanocomposite consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polypyrrole (PPy), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and investigates its electrical conductivity. The experimental results show that the nanocomposite exhibits continuous conduction at a filler content of around 0.4% (wt%). The study also proposes and validates several models for analyzing the electrical transport property of the nanocomposite, and confirms the dependence of the electrical conductivity on the weight fraction of fillers. The flexibility, simplicity, and versatility of these models suggest their potential use as characterization/simulation tools for predicting the electrical conductivity of polymer composites.

Low-Temperature Deformation Mechanism and Strain-Hardening Behaviour of Laser Welded Dual-Phase Steels

Isiaka Aderibigbe, Patricia Popoola, Emmanuel Sadiku, Elliot Biro

Summary: This paper analysed the change in microstructure and the low-temperature deformation and strain hardening behavior of laser welded DP800 and DP1000. The results showed that the fusion zone was fully martensitic and the heat-affected zone had a significant impact on the joint efficiency. The welded joints exhibited slightly increased strength and work hardening exponents compared to the base metals. Fractures occurred in the base metal and heat-affected zone of the welded joints, showing characteristic dimple fractures.

Azunna Agwo Eze, Emmanuel Rotimi Sadiku, Williams Kehinde Kupolati, Jacques Snyman, Julius Musyoka Ndambuki, Idowu David Ibrahim

Summary: In this study, a near-equiatomic multi-principal element alloy with nano- and micron-sized Nb particles was synthesized using spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The alloys with nano-sized Nb particles showed faster sintering, lower wear rate, and dendritic microstructure with nano-segregations. Cu-NbTiB2C alloy sintered at 650°C exhibited the highest microhardness, while CuNbTiB2C alloy with micron-sized Nb particles sintered at 700°C showed the best corrosion resistance in a sulfuric acid environment. These novel materials have great potential for aerospace applications.

Investigation of the Effects of Chain Extender on Material Properties of PLA/PCL and PLA/PEG Blends: Comparative Study between Polycaprolactone and Polyethylene Glycol

Karabo Innocent Matumba, Mpho Phillip Motloung, Vincent Ojijo, Suprakas Sinha Ray, Emmanuel Rotimi Sadiku

Summary: This study investigated the effect of Joncryl concentration on the properties of PLA/PCL and PLA/PEG blends. The addition of Joncryl influenced the properties of both blends, with reduced droplet size and improved compatibility observed in PLA/PCL blends, and the presence of a co-continuous morphology in PLA/PEG blends at certain Joncryl loadings. Joncryl addition also decreased the crystallinity of PCL and PEG in the blends. The thermal stabilities and mechanical properties of the blends were shown to be dependent on the Joncryl concentration.
