Summary: This article investigates the operating characteristics of the cryogenic energy storage device in a liquid air energy storage system. The use of cascaded packed beds to store cryogenic energy in different temperature ranges improves the energy and exergy efficiencies. Experimental results reveal the temperature variations during charging and discharging processes, and calculate the energy and exergy efficiencies.

Summary: This study aimed to observe the effect of uncontrolled-rate freezing on DPSCs stored for 6 and 12 months. It was found that DPSCs retained their stemness markers and low-level expression of hematopoietic markers even after one year of cryopreservation at -80 degrees C, suggesting that DPSCs can still be successfully used in potential clinical applications after a year of uncontrolled cryopreservation.

Summary: This study conducted an in situ experiment to investigate the effects of polypropylene microplastics (PP MPs) on Vallisneria natans litter decomposition dynamics in aquatic ecosystems. The results showed that high concentrations and large sizes of PP MPs can accelerate leaf litter biomass loss and nutrient release. PP MPs also significantly affected microbial respiration and microalgal and/or cyanobacteria chlorophyll-a. However, PP MPs had no effect on the abundance of associated macroinvertebrates.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of microorganisms in sediments along the Daihai Lakeshore and the influence of environmental factors on microorganisms. The results showed a positive correlation between the characteristics of microplastics and the abundance of dominant microorganisms. Functional metabolic pathways related to DNA replication, recombination and repair were found to be more prevalent in sampling sites with higher microplastics abundance.

Summary: Allogeneic blood vessels are considered a good substitute for diseased blood vessels due to their compliance and compatibility. Good preservation scheme for isolated blood vessels is important, as supply and demand may not always match. Cold storage is recommended when storage time is less than 14 days, and frozen storage is better afterwards.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different temperature conditions on nitritation denitrification. The results showed that stepwise cooling facilitated a faster start-up of the process and achieved higher nitrite accumulation compared to continuous low temperature conditions. Additionally, lower temperatures significantly inhibited denitrification activity.

Summary: This study investigates the natural convection effects in the insulation layers of spherical storage tanks and their impact on the tanks' performance. The permeability and Rayleigh number of the insulation material are considered as key factors. The results show that as the Rayleigh number increases, new convective cells emerge and cause the cold boundary to approach the external hot boundary. In the case of large temperature differences, multiple solutions may coexist.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of an alginate-based edible coating containing thyme essential oil (AEC-TEO) on the quality and safety of fresh-cut potatoes during a storage period of 16 days at 4 degrees C. The results showed that treatment with AEC-TEO at a 0.05% concentration was the most beneficial for maintaining quality and inhibiting the microorganism growth of fresh-cut potatoes. The reductions in bacterial total counts, total coliform counts, yeast and mold counts, and Lactobacillus counts were 2.41 log cfu/g, 1.37 log cfu/g, 1.21 log cfu/g, and 2 log cfu/g, and Listeria monocytogenes decreased by 3.63 log cfu/g on fresh-cut potatoes after 16 days. Therefore, AEC-TEO effectively improved the quality of fresh-cut potatoes and prolonged their shelf life to a certain extent.

Summary: The study showed that the heterogeneity of hydrate distribution significantly affects the mechanical parameters of hydrate-bearing sediments, including elastic modulus, shear strength, and dilation. Anisotropy of the hydrate heterogeneous distribution effect was also observed. Considering the impact of hydrate distribution heterogeneity is essential when characterizing the mechanical properties of GHBS.

Summary: In this study, metagenome sequencing technology was used to analyze the diversity of microbial community characteristics and the relationship between nitrogen and phosphorus functional genes in sediments from highland saline lakes. The study found that salinity had positive correlations with specific bacterial groups involved in major and minor metabolic pathways. Additionally, nitrogen functional genes had significant effects on phosphorus metabolic processes. Environmental factors, such as salinity, N/P ratio, and pH, influenced the diversity of bacterial community characteristics.

Summary: Microbial communities in different tidal zones of pristine mangroves exhibit significant diversity and distinct nutrient-cycling functions, influenced mainly by salinity and organic matter. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Chloroflexi are the predominant bacterial phyla, while Crenarchaeota and Thaumarchaeota are the main archaeal phyla across all zones. Bacillaceae family plays a crucial role in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling in the mangrove ecosystem.

Summary: The industrial evolution has led to the release of a large amount of toxic metals and metalloids into the environment, posing risks to both ecological systems and human health. Bioleaching is a preferable, cost-effective and environmentally safe option for removing these toxic substances.
