The trade of agricultural commodities can be associated with a virtual transfer of the local freshwater resources used for the production of these goods. Thus, trade of food products virtually transfers large amounts of water from areas of food production to far consumption regions, a process termed the 'globalization of water'. We consider the (time-varying) community structure of the virtual water network for the years 1986-2008. The communities are groups of countries with dense internal connections, while the connections are sparser among different communities. Between 1986 and 2008, the ratio between virtual water flows within communities and the total global trade of virtual water has continuously increased, indicating the existence of well defined clusters of virtual water transfers. In some cases (e. g. Central and North America and Europe in recent years) the virtual water communities correspond to geographically coherent regions, suggesting the occurrence of an ongoing process of regionalization of water resources. However, most communities also include countries located on different 'sides' of the world. As such, geographic proximity only partly explains the community structure of virtual water trade. Similarly, the global distribution of people and wealth, whose effect on the virtual water trade is expressed through simple 'gravity models', is unable to explain the strength of virtual water communities observed in the past few decades. A gravity model based on the availability of and demand for virtual water in different countries has higher explanatory power, but the drivers of the virtual water fluxes are yet to be adequately identified.

The value generated by irrigation in the command areas of new agricultural dams in Africa

Mokganedi Tatlhego, Davide Danilo Chiarelli, Maria Cristina Rulli, Paolo D'Odorico

Summary: In recent years, there have been continuous investments in new irrigation dams across Africa, resulting in the emergence of new irrigated areas. The ability to irrigate previously rainfed land increases crop production and agricultural value. This study uses crop water modeling to determine the economic benefits of irrigation in the command areas of major African dams built between 2000 and 2015, and evaluates the increase in agricultural revenues resulting from access to water for irrigation.

Visibility analysis of boundary layer transition

D. Perrone, L. Ridolfi, S. Scarsoglio

Summary: In this study, the transition to turbulence in a flat plate boundary layer was investigated using visibility analysis and network science metrics. The results showed the evolution of the flow from laminarity to turbulence and the effects of free-stream turbulence, and demonstrated the capability of the network-based approach to identify the onset markers for transition using only the streamwise velocity time-series.

Wind fluctuations affect the mean behaviour of naturally ventilated systems

Riccardo Vesipa, Luca Ridolfi, Pietro Salizzoni

Summary: We studied the dynamics of a naturally ventilated room with a steady source of buoyancy and an unsteady wind. We found that there was a noise-induced transition in the mean behavior of the system, which depended on the characteristics of the wind and its relative strength compared to thermal loads.

Frequent Storm Surges Affect the Groundwater of Coastal Ecosystems

Giovanna Nordio, Ryan Frederiks, Mary Hingst, Joel Carr, Matt Kirwan, Keryn Gedan, Holly Michael, Sergio Fagherazzi

Summary: Recent studies have mostly focused on the impact of large tropical cyclones on shorelines, disregarding the effects of less intense but more frequent events. This study analyzes the influence of offshore tropical storm Melissa on groundwater along the North America Atlantic coast. The findings show that Melissa led to a significant increase in groundwater level and specific conductivity, with a longer recovery time for conductivity. The study suggests that the increasing frequency of moderate storms will have a significant ecological impact on vegetated shorelines.

Summary: This study proposes a network-based approach to identify and characterize the large-scale coherent motion of blood in the healthy human aorta, reducing information loss. The anatomical length of persistence of large-scale coherent motion in the healthy thoracic aorta is influenced by the blood flow rate values rather than geometric attributes. Flow inertia plays a major role in the transport of coherent fluid structures.

An R&D perspective on international trade and sustainable development

Lorenzo Costantini, Francesco Laio, Luca Ridolfi, Carla Sciarra

Summary: Research and Development (R&D) is crucial for innovation, technological progress, sustainable development, and economic growth. In this study, a new perspective is introduced to analyze international trade by incorporating R&D and industrial activities. New indices, RDE and RDI, are proposed to summarize the R&D content of countries' export and import baskets, providing insights into the evolution of R&D choices and their impact on trade, innovation, and development. These indices offer complementary information to traditional measures of development and economic growth and can help explore the relationship between environmental performance and countries' role in international trade.

Coherent structures at the origin of time irreversibility in wall turbulence

Giovanni Iacobello, Subharthi Chowdhuri, Luca Ridolfi, Lamberto Rondoni, Stefania Scarsoglio

Summary: Using a multiscale approach, this study finds a connection between high time irreversibility levels and coherent motions in wall-bounded turbulence. Time irreversibility is a characteristic feature of non-equilibrium phenomena such as turbulent flows, and its connection with coherent motions in wall turbulence has not been investigated before. The outcomes reveal a strong correlation between irreversibility levels and coherent structures in both turbulent channel and boundary layer flows.

International corporations trading Brazilian soy are keystone actors for water stewardship

Elena De Petrillo, Marta Tuninetti, Luca Ridolfi, Francesco Laio

Summary: Transnational corporations play a significant role in reallocating global water resources, but their actions are not well-regulated. This study examines the virtual water trade of the top 9 transnational corporations involved in Brazilian soy trade and finds that the total virtual water flow increased from 43 billion m³ to 100 billion m³ between 2004 and 2018. The largest soy traders displace twice as much virtual water as top-importing countries, emphasizing the importance of corporate water stewardship and sustainable supply chains.

Investigating the magnitude and temporal localization of inertial particle in turbulent channel flows

Davide Perrone, J. G. M. Kuerten, Luca Ridolfi, Stefania Scarsoglio

Summary: Mixing of inertial point particles in turbulent channel flow at Re-z = 950 is studied using direct numerical simulations. The study considers the release of inertial particles, with varying Stokes number, from different positions inside the channel and analyzes their rate of coming close to each other. A Lagrangian framework is employed to analyze trajectories and study mixing and dispersion problems. The research provides a comprehensive understanding of mixing in an anisotropic turbulent flow by varying the release position of particles along the wall-normal direction. Moreover, the effects of particle inertia are analyzed and found to depend on the position and alignment of the sources due to the dependence of the flow timescales on the distance from the wall.
