To better understand interaction mechanisms of pine needles with persistent organic pollutants, single-solute and bi-solute sorption of phenanthrene and pyrene onto isolated cuticular fractions of pine needle were investigated. The structures of cuticular fractions were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and solid-state C-13 NMR. Polymeric lipids (cutin and cutan) exhibited notably higher sorption capabilities than the soluble lipids (waxes), while cellulose showed little affinity with sorbates. With the coexistence of the amorphous cellulose, the sorption of cutan (aromatic core) was completely inhibited, so the cutin components (nonpolar aliphatic moieties) dominated the sorption of bulk needle cuticle. By the consumption of the amorphous cellulose under acid hydrolysis, sorption capacities of the de-sugared fractions were dramatically enhanced, which controlled by the exposed aromatic cores and the aliphatic moieties. Furthermore, the de-sugared fractions demonstrated nonlinear and competitive sorption due to the specific interaction between aromatic cores and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. 1SWASP J010313.78+352903.7: A Totally Eclipsing Binary with Components in Poor Thermal Contact

Zhihua Wang, Liying Zhu, Kai Yuan

Summary: In this study, we analyzed the photometry of an EB-type totally eclipsing binary, 1SWASP J010313.78+352903.7, observed using the Xinglong 85 cm telescope. The results showed that it is a contact binary with a relatively low mass ratio, large fill-out factor, and a large temperature difference. The light curves exhibited asymmetric variations with a maximum variability of about 9%. A double-hot spots model on the surface of the cooler secondary adequately described these variations, indicating growing and evolving hot spots possibly caused by magnetic stellar activity and mass transfer. The large temperature difference between the contact components suggests a shared non-thermal equilibrium common envelope.

Dynamic Shear Strength Characteristics of Lightweight Clay-EPS Soil

Liping Zhu, Mingdong Li, Kejun Wen, Yukuai Wan

Summary: This study examined the dynamic shear strength characteristics of LCES and soft clay samples through dynamic triaxial tests. The results showed that the cement content significantly affects the dynamic strength of LCES, while the effect of EPS beads content on dynamic strength depends on the cement content. The dynamic shear strength of LCES increases with the increase of confining pressure.

Summary: Ions or charged vacancies drift induced by electric fields in organic-inorganic halide perovskites contribute to resistive switching memory (RSM) devices. Two-dimensional (2D) OIHP films are used as the switching layer to fabricate RSM devices with stable and low voltage resistive switching characteristics. The addition of a NiOx hole transport layer enhances the reliability of RSM devices in atmospheric conditions.

New results on the two low-mass-ratio overcontact binaries V1309 Herculis and AS Coronae Borealis

Azizbek Matekov, Fangbin Meng, Shengbang Qian, Ildar Asfandiyarov, Linjia Li, Shuhrat Ehgamberdiev, Liying Zhu

Summary: We present new multi-color light curves of V1309 Her and AS CrB observed by the 60 cm telescope at the Maidanak Astronomical Observatory. The analysis of our BVRCIC light curves combined with atmospheric parameters revealed that both systems are low-mass-ratio overcontact binaries. The periodic oscillations in their O - C curves were found and could be explained by the light travel-time effect of the third bodies.

Lihui Zhu, Na Zhang, Yaojia Hu, Yi Xu, Tingwei Luo, Yuqiong Xiang, Sishan Jiang, Zhiqiang Zhang, Muhua Chen, Yuee Xiong

Summary: This study investigated the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of pediatric healthcare workers regarding children's palliative care (CPC). The results showed that the overall level of knowledge, attitude, and behavior of the healthcare workers about CPC was moderate. Factors such as working years, highest education, professional title, job position, marital status, religion, grade of hospital, type of medical institution, experience of caring for a terminally ill child/kinsfolk, and total hours of CPC education and training received were found to influence CPC implementation and development. Therefore, it is important to emphasize continuous education and training for healthcare workers in CPC and to focus on the mentioned influencing factors to establish targeted training courses and evaluate post-training effects.

Summary: In this study, a mixed proton and electron conductor hybrid oxide neuromorphic transistor is proposed with the adoption of aqueous solution-processed mesoporous silica coating-based electrolyte as gate dielectric. The device exhibits optical and electrical synergetic coupling behaviors, showing typical synaptic responses and transition between short-term plasticity and long-term plasticity. Furthermore, it demonstrates interesting non-associative learning. The results indicate that the proposed MPEC hybrid oxide neuromorphic transistor has great potential in the field of neuromorphic engineering and could be applied in the bionic visual perception platform.

Rapid capture and killing of bacteria by lyophilized nFeS-Hydrogel for improved healing of infected wounds

Bowen Shen, Wenhan Li, Yuxian Wang, Shuyu Cheng, Xiaonan Wang, Liying Zhu, Yangheng Zhang, Lizeng Gao, Ling Jiang

Summary: Sulfur-containing nanomaterials, such as nano iron sulfide (nFeS), show great promise as nanodrugs for bacterial infection due to their antibacterial activity. However, the inorganic sulfur produced by nFeS can easily change its form or volatilize in aqueous solution, affecting its efficacy. To address this issue, we propose a novel strategy of encapsulating nFeS in a hydrogel to preserve the inorganic sulfides and enhance the interaction between nFeS and bacteria. Our study demonstrates that the nFeS-Hydrogel not only effectively maintains the antibacterial activity, but also exhibits reduced inflammation and excellent biocompatibility. It has great potential as a fast excipient for clearing infection, reducing inflammation, and accelerating wound healing.

A physiologically based pharmacokinetic model of diethyl phthalates in humans

Shiyu Chen, Zhenzhen Shi, Qiang Zhang

Summary: In this study, a human physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of diethyl phthalate (DEP) was developed to assess its toxicity. The model considers the distribution and metabolism of DEP and its active metabolite monoethyl phthalate (MEP) in different tissue compartments. Sensitivity analysis and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations were performed to evaluate the uncertainty and variability of the model parameters. The results suggest that dermal absorption is an important route of exposure to DEP in the environment.

Exploring a chemical input free advanced oxidation process based on nanobubble technology to treat organic micropollutants

Bangguo Wang, Lijing Wang, Wenxi Cen, Tao Lyu, Peter Jarvis, Yang Zhang, Yuanxun Zhang, Yinghui Han, Lei Wang, Gang Pan, Kaili Zhang, Wei Fan

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.
