The Cauvery river basin of South India has a large phyto-floristic wealth, rightfully enough to constitute a separate phyto-geographic unit. Increase in the anthropogenic pressures within the river basin and surrounding landscapes have persistently stressed the riparian ecosystem structure adversely, besides altering its composition. The objective of this study was to examine the present status of riparian vegetation along the Cauvery river basin, in response to anthropogenic pressures. For vegetation analysis, the riparian forest coming in the middle stretch of Cauvery river was categorized into two zones, viz., forest zone covering similar to 54 km stretch and agroecosystem zone covering similar to 80 km stretch. In each zone, tree species were quantified using transects at 8-km interval. Overall tree species accounting for both forest and agroecosystem were recorded and compared. The results indicate that the mean density and basal area of trees per plot were higher in the forest zone than agroecosystem zone. The Shannon-Weiner diversity of forest zone is 4.6, which is higher than agroecosystem. In addition, species composition indicated a relatively low or poor similarity between the two zones. The vegetation density and site disturbance scores for all the study sites reveals that sand mining and grazing areas have exerted negative impact on riparian forest. The results of the present study clearly brought out the need for preparing and implementing site-specific conservation plans for riparian ecosystem.

Influence of NaF salt doping on electrical and optical properties of PVA/PVP polymer blend electrolyte films for battery application

Mohammed Irfan, A. Manjunath, S. S. Mahesh, R. Somashekar, T. Demappa

Summary: Solid polymer electrolyte films composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) doped with sodium fluoride (NaF) at different weight ratios were prepared and characterized. The addition of NaF salt decreased the crystallinity of the samples and increased the conductivity, while the dielectric constant decreased with frequency increase. Optical constants were found to depend on NaF concentration in the polymer blend system. Transference number measurement revealed that charge transport in the polymer blend films was predominantly due to ions. Electrochemical cells were fabricated and various cell parameters were determined for the samples.

Summary: This study introduces a novel performance measure for polymer composites based on physical parameters, with the optimal dopant concentration determined through joint analysis of non-trivial correlations between physical parameters at different concentration levels. The measure is versatile for any chosen physical parameters and can be used for performance evaluation.

Summary: Gold nanoparticles are emerging as promising radiosensitizers due to their high biocompatibility. Bimetallic nanoparticles, such as PEG-coated Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles, have shown enhanced anticancer activity compared to monometallic nanoparticles. These nanoparticles demonstrate potent in vitro radiosensitization and better CT contrast enhancement ability, suggesting their potential dual function as radiosensitizer and CT contrast agent against oral cancers.

Summary: Different forms of silk exhibit different nonlinear optical behaviors at 1064 nm, with cocoon and fiber forms showing saturable absorption and film form showing reverse saturable absorption. Functional data analysis reveals correlations between silk varieties and optical parameters, aiding in the identification of samples with the best properties.

Summary: The structural and elastic properties of Suvin and MCU-5 cotton fibres were investigated using wide-angle X-ray data and various statistical methods in this study. The elastic constants were estimated and compared with experimental results, showing an acceptable correlation for both cotton varieties. Spatial images of elastic constants were obtained using the ELATE web application tool to explain the anisotropic properties of the fibres.

Structure-property relation in copper nanoparticles-based PVA/PVP composites

R. Akarsh, D. G. Raghavendra, M. Mahadevaiah, H. Somashekarappa, R. Somashekar

Summary: Polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVA/PVP) composite films were prepared with copper nanoparticles, and their AC conductivity, dielectric permittivity, UV-visible, FTIR, and X-ray diffraction analyses were conducted. The study estimated DC conductivity, hopping potential, hopping length, and thermal conductivity using the power law of frequency-dependent AC conductivity. Functional analysis was also used to establish the structure-property relation in these composites.
