A pilot study to measure ambient gamma dose rate and radon and thoron progeny concentrations was made for eight dwellings selected in Yangjiang, China. Indoor and outdoor ambient gamma dose rates were 110-370 and 100-220 nGy h(-1), respectively. Doses received from indoor terrestrial radiation were estimated to be 0.6-1.8 mSv year(-1). Radon, thoron and thoron progeny concentrations were 19-98, 18-1120 and 0.4-10.3 Bq m(-3), respectively. This pilot study showed that the position of passive-type monitors to be placed and the deployment period should be carefully determined for estimating reliable annual average concentrations.

Summary: After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, the relative contribution of natural radiation is increasing in Fukushima Prefecture. It is important to accurately determine the effective dose of exposure to artificial radiation by evaluating both natural and artificial components. A study in Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture, measured gamma-ray pulse-height distribution to evaluate the annual effective dose of external exposure from natural and artificial radionuclides. The annual effective dose of external exposure, discriminated into natural and artificial radionuclides, is expected to be used for radiation risk communication.

Ryohei Yamada, Masahiro Hosoda, Tomomi Tabe, Yuki Tamakuma, Takahito Suzuki, Kevin Kelleher, Takakiyo Tsujiguchi, Yoshiki Tateyama, Eka Djatnika Nugraha, Anna Okano, Yuki Narumi, Chutima Kranrod, Hirofumi Tazoe, Kazuki Iwaoka, Yumi Yasuoka, Naofumi Akata, Tetsuya Sanada, Shinji Tokonami

Summary: The concentrations of Rn-222 and Ra-226 in spring water in northern Japan were measured and found to be below the reference values set by international and European/American organizations. The annual effective ingestion dose from drinking this water was significantly lower than the overall annual effective dose from natural radiation to the Japanese population, but accounted for 8% of the WHO individual dosing criteria for drinking water.

Slow Conformational Changes of Blue Light Sensor BLUF Proteins in Milliseconds

Shunrou Tokonami, Morihiko Onose, Yusuke Nakasone, Masahide Terazima

Summary: The study revealed slow reaction kinetics in milliseconds for all examined BLUF proteins, contrary to previous beliefs of nanosecond red shifts. The slower dynamics in the tau(2)-phase were found to be strongly influenced by the size and nature of the C-terminal region adjacent to the BLUF domain, indicating its importance for biological functions. These results highlight the significance of Trp in the BLUF domain and propose a reaction scheme for BLUF reaction.

Summary: This paper presents the first investigation of the health impacts of indoor radon exposure and external dose from terrestrial radiation in Chiang Mai province during the dry season burning between 2018 and 2020. The results show that indoor radon activity concentration during the burning season was significantly higher compared to the non-burning season, and both exceeded the national and worldwide average values. The study also found that the external dose from terrestrial radiation during the burning season was higher than the worldwide average value. Overall, this study demonstrates that indoor radon and natural radioactive elements in the air play important roles in the development of lung cancer.

Serum Proteomic and Oxidative Modification Profiling in Mice Exposed to Total Body X-Irradiation

Masaru Yamaguchi, Yota Tatara, Eka Djatnika Nugraha, Yoshiaki Sato, Tomisato Miura, Masahiro Hosoda, Mukh Syaifudin, Shinji Tokonami, Ikuo Kashiwakura

Summary: Proteomic analysis of serum components from mice exposed to ionizing radiation revealed dose-dependent protein variations and oxidative modifications in albumin. It also detected variations in other proteins that correlated with radiation dose. These findings suggest that protein variations and serum albumin oxidative modification responses may serve as important indicators for the effects of radiation on living organisms and as potential biomarkers for radiation dose estimation.

Fruit Peel Powder as Natural Antioxidant and Reinforcing Bio-Filler in Natural Rubber Latex Gloves: Cases of Mangosteen, Pomelo and Durian

Arkarapol Thumwong, Jitsuna Darachai, Nuatawan Thamrongsiripak, Shinji Tokonami, Tetsuo Ishikawa, Kiadtisak Saenboonruang

Summary: This work aims to alleviate the issues caused by rapid increases in agricultural wastes by introducing waste fruit peel powder (FPP) derived from mangosteen, pomelo, or durian as natural antioxidants and reinforcing bio-fillers in natural rubber latex (NRL) gloves. The investigation showed that the addition of FPP to NRL composites enhanced the strength and elongation at the break of the specimens, and also provided natural antioxidant properties. The recommended FPP contents for actual glove production were determined based on the comparison with the requirements for medical examination latex gloves.

Reassessment of the radiocesium resuspension flux from contaminated ground surfaces in eastern Japan

Mizuo Kajino, Akira Watanabe, Masahide Ishizuka, Kazuyuki Kita, Yuji Zaizen, Takeshi Kinase, Rikuya Hirai, Kakeru Konnai, Akane Saya, Kazuki Iwaoka, Yoshitaka Shiroma, Hidenao Hasegawa, Naofumi Akata, Masahiro Hosoda, Shinji Tokonami, Yasuhito Igarashi

Summary: The resuspension of Cs-137 is crucial for understanding its behavior in the environment and estimating human exposure. Previous simulations underestimated the resuspension due to incorrect assumptions about the carriers and deposition rates. A new simulation, based on surface concentrations and deposition amounts, showed that the annual resuspension of Cs-137 in 2013 accounted for 0.96% of the initial deposition, with a significant amount of Cs-137 being redeposited. The simulation also revealed the presence of additional resuspension sources in Fukushima city.
