Summary: The study found that most patients with prolonged stays in the ICU are alive one year post-admission. Older age and previous comorbidities are associated with adverse long-term mortality outcome, while severity of illness or duration of ICU stay are not correlated with long-term survival.

Summary: MRSP carriage was detected in dogs from South East Queensland, with risk factors including previous hospitalisation, previous bacterial infection, consultation type, average precipitation, and human population density. The highest carriage probability was observed in Brisbane city, Sunshine Coast and Gympie, suggesting a geographical clustering of MRSP carriage in dog populations from the region.

Summary: This study examined the effects of various demographic, socioeconomic, housing, and environmental factors on heat-related morbidity in Maricopa County, Arizona, using OLS regression and MGWR. The results showed that spatial heterogeneity plays a key role in influencing the relationship between these factors, with certain variables having stronger local effects. These findings can help local stakeholders and urban planners address the negative impacts of extreme heat on human health.

Summary: This study characterizes county-level differences in pregnancy-related mortality based on sociospatial indicators. The results show variations in mortality rates across counties and by race and ethnicity, with several indicators associated with pregnancy-related deaths. Understanding these factors is crucial for informing public health policies to reduce pregnancy-related mortality.

Summary: This study examines the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of urban anthropogenic heat in the central urban area of Guangzhou from 2004 to 2020. The results show an overall trend of enhancement in anthropogenic heat, with different types of anthropogenic heat exhibiting varied characteristics in terms of area expansion and spatial changes. The increase in urban population, rapid economic development, and industrial production activities have contributed to the intensification of anthropogenic heat emissions.

Summary: This study investigates spatial variations in non-use of modern contraception in Bangladesh and identifies factors at the individual, household, and community levels associated with this. The research finds that 42.8% of the respondents in Bangladesh reported non-use of modern contraception, with significant variation observed across geographic locations. Women and partners with low levels of education were found to have the highest likelihood of non-use.

Summary: Surveying genetic variation in sympatric and allopatric populations of three South American moths, Cactoblastis cactorum, Cactoblastis doddi and Cactoblastis bucyrus, revealed genetic footprints of hybridization in sympatric areas. The study supported a scenario of allopatric speciation in the generalist C. cactorum, with genetic interchange during secondary contact with the specialists C. bucyrus and C. doddi likely experiencing sympatric speciation. Geographical and host plant use were identified as key drivers of divergence and gene flow.

Summary: Household food insecurity remains a serious public health problem in developing countries, including Ethiopia. Various factors influence household food insecurity and these factors vary geographically. In Ethiopia, there are significant spatial variations in household food insecurity among administrative zones. Factors such as availability of credit services, proximity to service centers, average years of schooling, and household assets are negatively associated with household food insecurity, while shocks, age, and dependency ratio increase the odds of food insecurity.

Summary: The study found that extreme heat and ozone exert combined effects at small geographical scales, affecting the risk of respiratory diseases, with certain areas showing strong joint effects. Factors such as income disparity, unemployment rate, and exposure to other air pollutants may enhance joint effects, while areas with a higher percentage of commuters who walk/bicycle exhibited weaker effects.

Summary: This qualitative study aimed to explore women's perspectives and understanding of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) screening and diagnosis, comparing the modified COVID-19 recommendations to the standard practices. The results showed that women preferred the modified GDM screening recommendations put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They also expressed a strong need for clear communication from health professionals and the opportunity to be active participants in decision making.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of repeated measures and missing data on the development of clinical deterioration prediction models using electronic medical record data from five Australian hospitals. The results showed that the variability of vital signs and patient consciousness were associated with missing data. Summary statistics and imputation methods improved model discrimination, but the clinical significance of these differences is questionable.

Summary: The study aimed to determine whether excluding gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on fasting venous plasma glucose (FVPG) assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had similar perinatal outcomes compared to excluding GDM using the standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) procedure in the previous year. The results showed that the frequencies of most perinatal outcomes were similar for women without GDM in 2019 and those for whom it was excluded in 2020 based on FVPG values. However, there was an increase in the risk of caesarean delivery in 2020 compared to 2019. The probabilities of several outcomes, such as respiratory distress, neonatal intensive care or special nursery admission, and large for gestational age babies, were slightly higher for women without GDM in 2020 compared to women without GDM in 2019.

Summary: This study assessed the methodological quality of economic evaluations on stroke prevention strategies for atrial fibrillation patients. The results showed that LAAC is a cost-effective strategy for preventing stroke in atrial fibrillation patients. However, the study identified shortcomings in the methodological quality, which raise concerns about the reliability and validity of the results.
