A novel tri-band CPW-fed antenna designed for RFID applications is reported. Limited to 30 x 30 mm(2) area on a PCBoard with epsilon(r) = 4.4, the antenna has four U-shaped, two F-shaped and two L-shaped slots as additional resonators to achieve multi-band operation. The intelligent single particle optimisation (ISPO) algorithm is used to determine the optimised slot configuration for the best return loss at 0.92, 2.45, and 5.8 GHz simultaneously. The performance of the designed antenna was characterised through simulations using the finite element method.
