In this article, a fuzzy potential function method is proposed for the secondary voltage and frequency control of microgrids instead of a traditional droop controller. Different potential functions are defined for each controllable micro-source such that the minimum value of the potential function represents the micro-source control target. The set-points of units are dynamically updated by the optimization unit located in the microgrid central controller using available communication links in the microgrid. The small signal stability assessment is used to determine the parameter of the fuzzy potential function. The studies are carried out in the time domain, using the developed program in a MATLAB environment (The MathWorks, Natick, Massacusetts, USA). The results demonstrate the accuracy and speed of the proposed potential function method in frequency and voltage control of islanded microgrids.
