Summary: The study demonstrated the utility of an additional foot ring in ensuring the orthogonality of postoperative X-rays for parameter measurement in hexapod external fixators. The use of the foot ring led to fewer repeated X-rays and reduced time for correction, potentially decreasing radiation exposure and cost for patients.

Summary: This study aimed to clarify the effectiveness of a novel technique utilizing the new unconstrained Ilizarov frame system for equinus deformity correction. The results showed that this technique allows for safe, gradual correction of equinus deformity without talar subluxation, although additional procedures, such as ankle arthrodesis, may be needed in some cases.

Summary: This study investigated the biomechanical properties of a novel semicircular locking external fixator and compared it to a standard Ilizarov-type circular external fixator. The results showed that the semicircular locking external fixator had higher axial stiffness, shorter application time, and no difference in torsional loading compared to the Ilizarov-type fixator.

Summary: This study conducted a review on circular external fixators (CEFs) in order to explore their design features and future directions. The study found that the developments of CEFs in terms of materials, automation, adjustment methods, component designs, wire-clamping, and performance evaluation have been extensively discussed. Meanwhile, the study also identified research gaps in the ease of assembly, effective wire-clamping methods, and CEFs embedded with online patient-monitoring systems, as well as a lack of research interest from low-middle and low-income countries.

Summary: This study proposed a three-degree-of-freedom electromotor-driven external fixator for the treatment of foot and ankle deformities. Computer-assisted correction software was developed to help surgeons measure required parameters from X-ray radiographs and generate correction trajectory and prescriptions. The simulation results of clinical cases showed that the developed external fixator can accurately and automatically correct foot and ankle deformities.

Summary: This article proposes a novel correction requirement-dominated design approach for composite parallel external fixator (PEF) to overcome the problems of existing PEFs in adapting to various deformity types. The approach introduces multisite frame mounting modes and multitype struts to form required PEF configurations. Clinical cases, composite PEF assembly simulations, and experiments on the mechanical prototype are conducted to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the approach.
