C. Mazariego, M. Jefford, R. J. Chan, N. Roberts, L. Millar, A. Anazodo, S. Hayes, B. Brown, C. Saunders, K. Webber, J. Vardy, A. Girgis, B. Koczwara

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop priority recommendations for the service level implementation of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) into clinical cancer care. A two-round modified Delphi survey was conducted to rank and prioritize statements related to PRO implementation. The results highlighted the importance of clinical relevance, stakeholder engagement, communication, and integration within existing processes and capabilities in implementing PROs in clinical cancer care.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology, clinical management, and outcomes of women with gestational breast cancer (GBC). The findings showed that patients diagnosed with GBC before 30 weeks of gestation required surgical and systemic cancer treatment during pregnancy, along with planned preterm birth. On the other hand, for patients diagnosed after 30 weeks, cancer treatment was deferred until postdelivery. The study also revealed that 42.5% of preterm babies required higher-level neonatal care, but there were no perinatal deaths or congenital malformations.

Rates of reoperation after breast conserving cancer surgery in Western Australia before and after publication of the SSO-ASTRO margins guideline

M. Luke Marinovich, Christobel M. Saunders, Gavin Pereira, Nehmat Houssami

Summary: This study investigated whether the introduction of the 2014 surgical margins guideline was associated with a reduction in reoperation rates for breast cancer patients in Western Australia. The results showed that the post-guideline reoperation rates did decrease, but this decline was already observed before the guideline was introduced.

Summary: Evidence from the BRIDGES study suggests that germline protein truncating variants (PTVs) in FANCM are associated with increased risk of ER-negative and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), particularly for those with a family history. This study further investigates the association between FANCM missense variants (MVs) and breast cancer risk using the BRIDGES study, analyzing a total of 689 MVs. The results indicate that FANCM MVs may be low/moderate risk factors for ER-negative and TNBC subtypes of breast cancer.

Iodine-125 seed versus hook-wire guided breast conserving surgery: do post operative complication rates differ?

Wei Ling Ooi, Brenno Becker, Michael Phillips, Christobel Saunders, Donna Taylor

Summary: This study compared the post-operative complication rates and safety profiles of Radio-guided occult lesion localisation using iodine 125 seeds (ROLLIS) and hook-wire localisation (HWL) for breast conserving surgery. The results showed similar complication rates between the two methods, suggesting that ROLLIS can be used as an alternative with demonstrated superiority and efficacy.

Alternative methods to measure breast density in younger women

Rachel Lloyd, Sarah Pirikahu, Jane Walter, Gemma Cadby, Ellie Darcey, Dilukshi Perera, Martha Hickey, Christobel Saunders, Karol Karnowski, David D. Sampson, John Shepherd, Lothar Lilge, Jennifer Stone

Summary: This study examines the acceptability and performance of two alternative breast density measures, Optical Breast Spectroscopy (OBS) and Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), in women aged 18-40. The results showed that over 93% of participants deemed OBS and DXA to be acceptable. The correlation between OBS-%water + collagen and %FGV was 0.48, and age and BMI were associated with breast density measures.

In vivo optical coherence tomography attenuation imaging of the breast surgical cavity using a handheld probe

Peijun Gong, Ken Y. Foo, Devina D. Lakhiani, Renate Zilkens, Hina M. Ismail, Chris Yeomans, Benjamin F. Dessauvagie, Bruce Latham, Christobel M. Saunders, Brendan F. Kennedy

Summary: To aid in the accurate removal of cancer cells during breast-conserving surgery, researchers have developed a handheld optical coherence tomography (OCT) probe and attenuation imaging method, which allows real-time imaging of the surgical cavity. Through experimental validation, this method has been shown to provide accurate and repeatable imaging, and offers an additional tissue contrast mechanism to assist in the identification and removal of cancer cells during breast-conserving surgery.

Stereoscopic optical palpation for tumour margin assessment in breast-conserving surgery

Qi Fang, Seokhyun Choi, Aiden Taba, Devina D. Lakhiani, Kyle Newman, Renate Zilkens, Rowan W. Sanderson, Benjamin F. Dessauvagie, Christobel M. Saunders, Brendan F. Kennedy

Summary: Optical palpation is a new emerging technique that uses an optical imaging system to generate images of mechanical contrast in tissue. A camera-based optical palpation system, called stereoscopic optical palpation (SOP), is proposed in this paper to directly map the strain of a compliant layer placed on top of the tissue. With SOP, a strain sensitivity of 4.2 m is achieved, which is a 24-fold improvement over previous camera-based optical palpation techniques. SOP has the potential for rapid and reliable imaging, and could be used for tumor margin assessment in breast-conserving surgery.
