Sea chub, Girella laevifrons, is a coastal fish that inhabits high intertidal rockpools along the coast of Chile. The intertidal pools where the juveniles live, are an extreme environment with high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, becoming harmful to the organisms, due to oxidative stress generated by reactive oxygen species. For this reason organisms develop adaptations that allow them to survive in this complex environment. The search of biomonitor species, sensitive to UV radiation is very important in aquatic ecosystems, mainly in the southern hemisphere where depletion of the ozone layer and the consequent increase of UV radiation, have become an environmental problem. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ultraviolet radiation in G. laevifrons and its possible use as UV-B radiation biomonitor specie in intertidal systems, which are very important for the Chilean fisheries. The effect of UV radiation exposure on juvenile G. laevifrons was measured through oxidative stress parameters. Catalase's activity increased with the time of exposure, unlike superoxide dismutase's activity which peaked at 2 h, decreasing towards the 5th hour of irradiation. The superoxide dismutase activity in muscle tissue did not show significant differences. The lipid peroxidation and DNA damage increased in relation to exposition times. Tissue muscle's DNA damage was shown only at 5 h of exposure. Significant differences between the two organs in the antioxidant capacity were observed, the liver of G. laevifrons exhibited the higher antioxidant capacity. It can be concluded that this specie exhibits effective protection mechanisms against UV radiation exposure and it is not appropriate specie as a biomonitor in intertidal systems. Oceanographic influences on the early life stages of a mesopelagic fish across the Chilean Patagonia

Victor Molina-Valdivia, Claudia A. Bustos, Manuel Castillo, Francesca Search, Guido Plaza, Mauricio F. Landaeta

Summary: The study investigated the influence of spring environmental conditions on the growth rates of pearlside Maurolicus australis in western Patagonia, finding that egg size directly affected size-at-hatch while being independent of lipid reserves. Larval growth rates varied latitudinally, with temperature decreases and salinity gradients affecting growth, but daily fluctuations in sea surface temperature did not significantly impact back-calculated detrend growth rates.

Year-round high abundances of the world's smallest marine vertebrate (Schindleria) in the Red Sea and worldwide associations with lunar phases

Vanessa Robitzch, Victor Molina-Valdivia, Jaiber J. Solano-Iguaran, Mauricio F. Landaeta, Michael L. Berumen

Summary: Research on abundance patterns and lunar phase-related trends of Schindleria fish in the Red Sea indicates that their abundance is affected by seasonal and spatial differences, likely related to habitat and environmental conditions. Significant differences in adult Schindleria abundance in relation to lunar phases were found, with most caught outside the full moon, mainly during the new moon in the Red Sea.

Influence of oceanographic conditions on the body shape variability of Scomber japonicus larvae from the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula

Summary: Through geometric morphometric analysis, this study explores the relationship between the shape changes of Pacific chub mackerel larvae and oceanographic variability. The results show that the body shape of the larvae is mainly influenced by sea surface flow and sea temperatures. The larvae can be classified into two main morphotypes, with one morphotype being more hydrodynamic in response to increased sea surface flow and colder sea surface temperatures during spring, and the other morphotype being more robust in response to slower current flow and warmer sea surface temperatures during winter and summer.

DNA reconciles morphology and colouration in the drunk blenny genus Scartichthys (Teleostei: Blenniidae) and provides insights into their evolutionary history

Erwan Delrieu-Trottin, Hans Hartmann-Salvo, Pablo Saenz-Agudelo, Mauricio F. Landaeta, Alejandro Perez-Matus

Summary: The blenniids of the genus Scartichthys are common fishes of Central and South American Pacific coastal reefs. However, identifying species within the genus is challenging due to elusive taxonomic characters and varying color patterns in the field. This study combines coloration, morphological, and molecular data to revise the taxonomy of Scartichthys and identifies three valid species. The results also show the divergence times between the species, providing insights into the evolution of the genus.

Mismatch between shape changes, early growth, and condition for a temperate reef fish from an oceanic island

Mauricio F. Landaeta, Yanara Figueroa-Gonzalez, Gonzalo Moyano, Javier Vera-Duarte, Alejandro Perez-Matus, Guido Plaza

Summary: Settlement of marine fish involves shape and ecological changes during the transition from pelagic larvae to benthic juveniles. In this study of the wrasse Pseudolabrus gayi from the south-eastern Pacific, settlers exhibited variation in mouth orientation and body shape across sites, with differences in condition and growth pre and post-settlement. The findings highlight the dynamic nature of settlement-transition period and asynchronous changes in body shape and early life-history traits.

Bernardita Campos, Mauricio F. Landaeta

Summary: This research estimated the abundance of main groups of planktonic mollusks along a longitudinal gradient between mainland Chile and the Easter Island ecoregion in the Southeast Pacific Ocean. Results showed spatial variation of planktonic mollusks in different water zones, with bivalve larvae increasing in warmer, salty and vertically mixed waters.

Unraveling the morphological patterns of a subantarctic eelpout: a geometric morphometric approach

Summary: Phenotypic variation in marine species is influenced by both genotype and environmental constraints. This study focused on the morphology of the eelpout Austrolycus depressiceps and found variations in the shape of the head and cephalic sensory canals, possibly caused by allometric effects. Spatial differences and modularity in the development of the head shape and sensory canals were also observed.

Summary: This study compared the swimming ability and haematological analyses between non-parasitised and parasitised Girella laevifrons fish. The results showed that parasitised fish had lower swimming ability, indicating anemia and immune response. There was a negative correlation between swimming time and leukocyte counts. However, as time passed, the blood parameters of parasitised fish gradually returned to normal levels.

Summary: This study provides the first description of the morphology, condition, and diet of the rockcod Patagonotothen tessellata from Chilean Central Patagonia. Sexual shape dimorphism was found in snout extension, mouth size, and pelvic fin insertion. Male rockcod showed preferences for Patagonotothen spp., unidentified crustaceans, and polychaetes, while females primarily consumed unidentified fish and crustaceans. Significant differences in diet composition were observed between sexes, but not among size groups. There was a weak but significant relationship between diet and morphology.

Summary: This study analyzed the distributional patterns and diversity of ichthyoplankton in the southern Chilean fjords. Spatial variations in the composition and abundance of ichthyoplankton were observed, while temporal variations were not significant. Linking shape and growth in young-of-the-year rockfish: an ecological carry-over effect?

Summary: Using a combination of methods, this study investigated the potential carryover effect between environmental conditions, larval growth, and the morphology of rockfish settlers. Two sympatric morphotypes of young-of-the-year rockfish were found, which showed differences in growth trajectories. The results suggest ecological carryover effects of the growth history of larval stages on the phenotype of rockfish settlers.
