The use of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as dipyrone is so widespread that this drug and its metabolites have been detected in effluents and surface water. This study aimed to evaluate the potential toxic effects of dipyrone on the aquatic environment, using a native fish species, Rhamdia quelen. Fish were exposed to three concentrations of dipyrone, 0.5, 5 and 50 mu g/L, in the water for 15 days, and hematological, biochemical, genetic and morphological biomarkers were evaluated. The glutathione S-transferase activity decreased in the highest concentration in relation to the control group. In addition, hematocrit, red blood cells and thrombocyte counts were decreased in all three exposed groups in relation to the control group. The comet assay showed DNA damage at the lowest concentration of dipyrone and significant kidney damage. Those results suggest that a constant exposure of aquatic organisms to dipyrone presents potential toxic effects. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Organic and inorganic pollutants in Jordao and Iguacu rivers southern Brazil impact early phases of Rhamdia quelen and represent a risk for population

Natalia Golin, Luiza Santos Barreto, Luise Esquivel, Tugstenio Lima de Souza, Mariana Gallucci Nazario, Andrea Pinto Oliveira, Cesar Castro Martins, Ciro Alberto de Oliveira Ribeiro

Summary: The Iguacu River basin is ecologically important due to its endemic fish species. However, chemical pollution poses a threat to this biodiversity. This study evaluated the toxic effects of the Iguacu and Jorda tilde o rivers, as well as their combination, on the embryo-larval phase of R. quelen. Mathematical modeling showed that fish exposed to Jorda tilde o River experienced the greatest population reduction, followed by the Iguacu River. The Jorda tilde o River was found to be most impacted by micro-pollutants.

Summary: Aquatic biota is facing increased exposure to chemical pollutants from human activities, and the relationship between environmental pollution and fish reproduction is an ongoing concern. Vitellogenin (Vtg) is a biomarker used to assess xenoestrogen exposure in fish, and this study provides the first physicochemical characterization of Vtg from Oreochromis niloticus. The findings reveal important structural differences between two chemical forms of Vtg (VtgAb and VtgC) and contribute to the development of ecotoxicological immunoassays for studying endocrine disruption and fish reproduction.

Turning glycerol surplus into renewable syngas through glycerol steam reforming over a sol-gel Ni-Mo2C-Al2O3 catalyst

Rafael D. T. Barreto, Luiz Pereira Ramos, Regina Maria M. Jorge, Luiz Mario M. Jorge

Summary: A sol-gel Ni-Mo2C-Al2O3 catalyst is used in glycerol steam reforming for syngas production for the first time. The catalyst's stability and activity are investigated at temperatures ranging from 550°C to 700°C and for up to 30 hours. Increasing the reaction temperature from 550°C to 700°C boosts H2 yield from 22% to 60%. The catalyst shows high stability for 30 hours at milder conditions, with final conversion, H2 yield, and H2/CO ratio of 95%, 53%, and 1.95, respectively. Additionally, the morphology of carbon deposits on spent catalysts becomes more graphitic with higher reaction temperatures, and total coke formation is mitigated by increasing temperature and lowering GHSV. Sublethal effects of the herbicides atrazine and glyphosate at environmentally relevant concentrations on South American catfish (Rhamdia quelen) embryos

Eduarda Roberta Bordin, Flavia Yoshie Yamamoto, Yorrannys Mannes, Renan Cesar Munhoz, Juan Ramon Esquivel Muelbert, Adriane Martins de Freitas, Marta Margarete Cestari, Wanessa Algarte Ramsdorf

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of exposure to atrazine and glyphosate, both separately and in mixtures, on South American catfish embryos. The embryos showed sublethal effects such as fin damage and axial and thoracic damage. The mixture of active ingredients caused an increase in SOD and GST, while the mixture of commercial formulations did not. The activity of AChE was significantly reduced after exposure to atrazine and the mixture of active ingredients. The herbicide mixtures were found to be more toxic to the embryos compared to individual herbicides.

Summary: The health risks to wild fish exposed to pollution from multiple sources are mainly caused by metal contamination from mining activities and organic contamination from other sources. The biomarkers response in fish is affected by seasonal variations. Integrating chemical data with suitable biomarkers is an effective strategy to assess ecological risks in the Doce River Basin. It is necessary to protect the river ecosystem and wildlife.

Summary: In this study, steam explosion was used as the first step in producing cellulosic ethanol from Eucalyptus grandis sawdust. The effect of moisture content, temperature, and residence time on enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation yields was evaluated. The results showed that washing the pretreated sawdust with water improved the hydrolysis efficiency and ethanol production yield, with the highest yield obtained at 205°C for 10 minutes. Under this condition, 227 L ethanol and 40 kg xylose were obtained per ton of dry eucalypt sawdust.

Ecotoxicological effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) on aquatic organisms: Current research and emerging trends

Eduarda Roberta Bordin, Wanessa Algarte Ramsdorf, Luana Maria Lotti Domingos, Luis Phelipe de Souza Miranda, Ney Pereira Mattoso, Marta Margarete Cestari

Summary: The rapid development of nanotechnology has led to the release of various products without fully understanding their potential impact on the environment. This study focuses on the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) on non-target organisms, aiming to ensure human health and environmental safety. A systematic review of available data on the toxicity of ZnO-NPs to freshwater and marine/estuarine aquatic organisms was conducted. The findings suggest that freshwater invertebrates are the most commonly used organisms in ecotoxicological tests. The primary mechanisms of ZnO-NPs toxicity involve the release of Zn2+ ions and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
