The eStation is a collecting and processing system designed to automatically deal with the reception, processing, analysis and dissemination of key environmental parameters derived from remotely sensed data. Developed mainly at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, the eStation has been distributed to 47 sub-Saharan countries in the frame of the AMESD (African Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable Development) project to provide local institutions with the capacity to easily access a large range of remote sensing products on vegetation, precipitation, fires and oceans. These products, derived from the processing of images coming from various instruments including SPOT-Vegetation, MSG-SEVIRI and MODIS are developed to allow end-users to make local and regional assessments of the state of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The products, dispatched to the users through the EUMETSAT data broadcasting system (EUMETCast) or provided by other Earth Observation (EO) data agencies (e.g. NASA), are further processed by the eStation to allow end-users to generate their own environmental, whether terrestrial or marine, assessments and reports. Initially designed as a stand-alone system using an open source development framework, the eStation has recently been further developed as a web processing service to allow a broader range of end-users to access the data and services over the Internet. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce the readers to the eStation and its products, to share the lessons learnt in deploying these services as well as to discuss its more recent use in chained environmental web based modeling services. Revisiting species and areas of interest for conserving global mammalian phylogenetic diversity

Marine Robuchon, Sandrine Pavoine, Simon Veron, Giacomo Delli, Daniel P. Faith, Andrea Mandrici, Roseli Pellens, Gregoire Dubois, Boris Leroy

Summary: This study identifies priority species/areas for conserving global mammalian phylogenetic diversity based on targeting net positive outcomes in future projected biodiversity. The research highlights the difference between priority species/areas and loss-significant species/areas, while also emphasizing the lack of protection for these newly-identified species/areas.

Summary: This study reviews methods for the biophysical characterization of terrestrial protected areas (PAs) at a global scale by means of remote sensing and provides recommendations to improve existing initiatives, emphasizing the importance of considering structural and functional attributes, integrating a broad spectrum of variables, and utilizing cloud-based platforms for large-scale characterization.

Conserving species' evolutionary potential and history: Opportunities under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

Summary: Genetic diversity and phylogenetic diversity are representative of species' evolutionary potential and history, and they provide most of the biodiversity benefits to humanity. However, these two aspects have been overlooked in previous biodiversity policies. With the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, we analyze how genetic diversity and phylogenetic diversity are considered and discuss how their incorporation can strengthen conservation efforts. While certain indicators could be improved, both genetic diversity and phylogenetic diversity are integral to the recently adopted framework. This represents a significant improvement compared to the previous CBD strategic plan and an unprecedented opportunity to prioritize species' evolutionary potential and history in public biodiversity policies. We urge the scientific community to seize this opportunity and enhance the conservation of species' evolutionary potential and history.

Spaceborne LiDAR reveals the effectiveness of European Protected Areas in conserving forest height and vertical structure

Guido Ceccherini, Marco Girardello, Pieter S. A. Beck, Mirco Migliavacca, Gregory Duveiller, Gregoire Dubois, Valerio Avitabile, Luca Battistella, Jose I. Barredo, Alessandro Cescatti

Summary: We evaluate the effectiveness of European Protected Areas in conserving the vertical structure of forests using data from the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation. Our findings show that European forests inside protected areas are on average 2m taller and more complex in vertical structure compared to nearby unprotected areas. Furthermore, forests outside protected areas exhibit greater variations in canopy height, likely due to forest management practices.

Assessing habitat diversity and potential areas of similarity across protected areas globally

Summary: Biophysical characterization analyses are essential for informed planning and management decisions of protected areas (PA). This study combines remote sensing and modeling to identify functional habitat types and map similar areas. New habitat diversity and irreplaceability indices allow for the comparison and ranking of PAs. The results inform PA planning, management, conservation efforts, and ecological connectivity studies.

Summary: The rate and extent of global biodiversity change is exceeding our capabilities in measurement, monitoring, and prediction. To address this, we propose the establishment of a global biodiversity observing system (GBiOS) that is interconnected, coordinating worldwide monitoring efforts and informing action towards international biodiversity targets.
