Prediction of climate warming impacts on plant species could be more complex than expected. Evidence from a case study in the Himalaya

Many studies have investigated the possible impact of climate change on the distributions of plant species. In the present study, we test whether the concept of potential distribution is able to effectively predict the impact of climate warming on plant species. Using spatial simulation models, we related the actual (current species distribution), potential (modelled distribution assuming unlimited dispersal) and predicted (modelled distribution accounting for wind-limited seed dispersal) distributions of two plant species under several warming scenarios in the Sagarmatha National Park (Nepal). We found that the two predicted distributions were, respectively, seven and nine times smaller than the potential ones. Under a +3 degrees C scenario, both species would likely lose their actual and predicted distributions, while their potential distributions would remain partially safe. Our results emphasize that the predicted distributions of plant species may diverge to a great extent from their potential distributions, particularly in mountain areas, and predictions of species preservation in the face of climate warming based on the potential distributions of plant species are at risk of producing overoptimistic projections. We conclude that the concept of potential distribution is likely to lead to limited or inefficacious conservation of plant species due to its excessively optimistic projections of species preservation. More robust strategies should utilize concepts such as optimal reintroduction, which maximizes the benefit-cost ratio of conservation activities by limiting reintroduction efforts to suitable areas that could not otherwise be reached by a species; moreover, such strategies maximize the probability of species establishment by excluding areas that will be endangered under future climate scenarios. Summary: The selection of resilient cultivars can help mitigate the losses in forage production caused by climate change. Secale strictum, a wild grass species, shows potential as a forage crop. We investigated the germination requirements of six wild S. strictum populations in Italy, focusing on their tolerance to different osmotic conditions. Our findings suggest that some populations of S. strictum are drought tolerant at the germination stage, indicating their suitability for cultivation in arid areas. Moreover, the germination rates of wild populations are correlated with the seasonality of rainfall at their natural growing sites, emphasizing the importance of selecting appropriate source lineages for crop development.

Summary: Research in global change ecology often relies on global climatic grids, which may not accurately reflect temperature conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface. This study provides global maps of soil temperature at different depths, highlighting the significant differences between soil and air temperature. These maps are valuable for ecological applications, but further improvement in spatiotemporal resolution is needed.

On farm plant reintroduction: A decision framework for plant conservation translocation in EU agro-ecosystems

Summary: The increased demand for food produced sustainably has led to improvements in intensive management in agroecosystems. However, these improvements may result in isolated niches where plant species cannot recolonize fragmented agroecosystems. Plant reintroduction can overcome dispersal limitations, but may also create conflicts that threaten conservation efforts. Involving farmers and local stakeholders in conservation projects from the beginning, and ensuring that their efforts result in economic benefits, can facilitate coexistence of threatened plants and crops in agroecosystems.

Comparative seed longevity under genebank storage and artificial ageing: a case study in heteromorphic wheat wild relatives

Summary: Seed longevity is a complex trait that varies among species, populations, and different seed morphs produced by the same plant. This study evaluated the differences in longevity and oxidative stress status in heteromorphic seeds aged in two different storage conditions, and found that ROS levels and gene expression related to ROS scavenging varied between seed morphs and storage environments. The results suggest caution should be used when inferring ranks of longevity under cold storage based on controlled ageing tests.

Alpine plant communities differ in their seed germination requirements along a snowmelt gradient in the Caucasus

Summary: The mesoscale heterogeneity of alpine landscapes generates snowmelt gradients, resulting in distinct vegetation zones. This study compared the seed germination niches of 18 plant species occurring in four plant communities along an alpine snowmelt gradient in Russia. The results showed that different plant communities had significant differences in temperature requirements for seed germination, while soil moisture was a limiting factor for seedling establishment along the entire gradient. Seed germination patterns varied depending on the position along the snowmelt gradient.

Two decades of climate change alters seed longevity in an alpine herb: implications for ex situ seed conservation

Summary: Climate warming in mountain areas is affecting the longevity of seeds of alpine species stored in genebanks. Seeds produced under a warmer parental environment have longer longevity in storage. The study found that seed longevity was not affected by seed mass or length of time in storage, but was influenced by temperature and precipitation during the growing season. This suggests that genebank stored seeds can provide insights into the response of alpine species to future climate changes.

Wetland attributes significantly affect patterns of bird species distribution in the Sardinian wetlands (Italy): An uncertain future for waterbird conservation

Summary: This study investigates the avian metacommunity of the Sardinian wetlands and finds that salinity, tourism pressure, wetland isolation, and water discharges negatively affect avian diversity. Overlap and Segregation among Multiple 3D Home Ranges: A Non-Pairwise Metric with Demonstrative Application to the Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni

Summary: Modeling animal space use in 3D can provide a more realistic understanding of animal interactions, such as competition and predator-prey relationships. The novel non-pairwise index MVOI and its complement MVSI can accurately measure the degree of overlap/segregation among 3D volumetric home ranges, which traditional 2D methods may overestimate. These indices can also be used to assess changes in 3D home ranges over time and the robustness of 3D estimators. The application of these indices to birds demonstrated the importance of considering the vertical component of animal space use.

A first insight into the post-breeding dispersal strategies of adult Lesser Kestrels Falco naumanni in Italy

Optimized Monitoring and Conservation of Farmland Bird Species through Bayesian Modelling: The Montagu's Harrier Circus pygargus Population in Central Italy

Towards a More Efficient In and Ex Situ Conservation of Sri Lankan Wild Rice Species

Summary: Five species of wild Oryza in Sri Lanka are facing decline due to habitat loss, and this study aimed to improve conservation efforts by providing information on their distribution and status. Occurrence records were collected and a gap analysis was conducted to determine high-priority areas and species for conservation. It was found that expanding protected areas and increasing representation in gene banks are necessary for effective conservation. O. rhizomatis, O. eichengeri, and O. rufipogon were identified as high-priority species for in situ conservation.
