Summary: The study reveals the structure and functional mechanisms of the Kv2.1 voltage-activated potassium channel, providing insights into how mutations affect channel activity. Inactivation in Kv2.1 is found to be caused by dynamic alterations in electromechanical coupling, which suggests a conserved mechanism in voltage-activated cation channels and its relevance for regulating neuron firing.

Summary: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common atrial tachyarrhythmia, and direct current cardioversion (DCCV) is a treatment method, but there is a high percentage of AF recurrences after this procedure. To assess the prognosis of DCCV effectiveness, clinical, biochemical, and echocardiographic parameters are used. This review aims to systematize the current knowledge on echocardiographic measurements in patients with persistent AF for assessing the progress of atrial wall remodeling, which impacts the maintenance of sinus rhythm after DCCV.

Summary: This study presents an optimization strategy for the electromechanical coupling factor, k, in piezoelectric materials by texturing and covalency tuning. The results show that the k values achieved are comparable to those of single crystals. Through experimental and phase field simulation methods, the researchers demonstrate that the k value can reach the level of single crystals, far exceeding the average value of traditional ceramics. Additionally, a theoretical model reveals that the physical origin of k in perovskite ferroelectrics is mainly attributed to the strong covalent bonding between B-site cation and oxygen via d-p hybridization. The demonstration of near-ideal k values in textured ceramics has significant implications for the design of ultra-wide bandwidth, high efficiency, high power density, and high stability piezoelectric devices.

Summary: Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) has been applied in the clinical environment for full-field and label-free imaging of blood flow and tissue perfusion. In this study, a random matrix description was used to separate single and multiple scattering components in LSCI using a dual-sensor laparoscopy. Test results from in-vitro tissue phantom, in-vivo rat experiments, and pre-clinical swine experiment showed the potential of this new laparoscopy, particularly in intraoperative laparoscopic surgery and other clinical diagnostics and therapies.

Summary: In this paper, a frequency-dependent micromechanics-based model is developed to study the nonlinear electromechanical coupling behaviors of ferroelectric composites, which are found to be influenced by the volume concentration, shape, and frequency of the external applied field. The modeling approach involves introducing an exponential function to evaluate certain properties of the ferroelectric phase and using a two-level micromechanics-based model to analyze the hysteresis loops and butterfly-shaped responses at different frequencies.

Summary: This study reveals that the out-of-plane converse flexoelectric effect of atomically thin MoS2 and WSe2 exceeds their intrinsic in-plane piezoresponse, with significantly enhanced CFE compared to their bulk counterparts. Additionally, an anomalous reduction in converse flexoresponse in the monolayer structure is observed and attributed to a puckering deformation.

Summary: The electromechanical coupling characteristics of a double-layer piezoelectric quasicrystal micro/nano-actuator were studied, with a focus on the effects of van der Waals force and Casimir force on phonon stress and displacement. The study also revealed that the phonon-phason coupling elastic coefficient and nonlocal scale parameter have positive and negative effects on static responses.

Summary: The authors use non-invasive atrial electromechanical assessment during atrial fibrillation to identify early remodeling changes associated with underlying myopathy, which decreases the probability of successful rhythm control. This study provides mechanistic insights into the electromechanical remodeling process associated with AF progression and demonstrates its prognostic value in the clinic.

Summary: The direct interaction between a non-equilibrium gas discharge and a liquid volume leads to the generation of a plasma activated liquid, which induces flows in both the gas above the liquid and within the liquid volume. The dominant mechanism driving the liquid flow at the plasma-liquid interface is found to be correlated with the charge relaxation time of the liquid.

Summary: Sea urchin hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (spHCN) ion channels are activated by membrane hyperpolarization instead of depolarization and undergo inactivation with hyperpolarization. The study found that rotation of the C-linker was elicited by hyperpolarization in the absence but not the presence of cAMP, implying a conserved mechanism for CNBD-family channels.
