Summary: Long-term follow-up revealed no differences in severe complications between laparoscopic lavage and primary resection as treatments for perforated purulent diverticulitis. However, recurrence of diverticulitis was more common in the laparoscopic lavage group, often leading to sigmoid resection. This aspect should be considered alongside the lower stoma prevalence in decision-making for treatment options.

Summary: This study analyzed a cohort of patients with Hinchey III diverticulitis from two large randomized trials and identified active smoking status and corticosteroid use as risk factors for treatment failure in the laparoscopic lavage group.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term distress and functional outcomes in patients who underwent emergency surgery for perforated diverticulitis. The results showed that regardless of the technique used, patients experienced long-term bodily dysfunction and regular follow-up could benefit them.

Summary: This study compared the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic lavage and sigmoidectomy for patients with perforated diverticulitis and purulent peritonitis. The results showed that after 36 months, laparoscopic lavage was associated with fewer reoperations and lower stoma rates in patients who were still alive, compared to sigmoidectomy. However, there were no differences in terms of cumulative morbidity or mortality. Therefore, patient selection should be improved to reduce the risk of short-term complications.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the long-term outcomes of patients with perforated diverticulitis treated with resection or laparoscopic lavage (LL). The results showed that LL had lower odds of long-term ostomy and reoperation, but higher odds of disease recurrence compared to colonic resection. Colonic resection with primary anastomosis had better long-term outcomes than the Hartmann procedure for patients with fecal peritonitis.

Summary: DCS is a safe technique for the treatment of acute perforated diverticulitis with generalized peritonitis, allowing a high rate of colorectal anastomosis and stoma-free hospital discharge in more than half of the patients.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of sigmoid resection and primary anastomosis and sigmoid resection and primary anastomosis with a proximal diversion in patients with diverticulitis and diffuse peritonitis. The results showed similar outcomes between the two methods. However, further randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these results.

Summary: Diverticulitis is no longer considered a disease of the elderly, as it is increasingly affecting younger patients. Genetic factors may play a larger role in diverticulitis than previously thought. There are potential similarities between diverticulitis and inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome. Computed tomography imaging is the standard for classifying the severity of diverticulitis.

Summary: This study investigates the structural response of small diameter corrugated HDPE drainage pipes on agricultural lands, considering different soil textures and machinery wheel loads. The results show that bonded friction conditions generally induce larger stresses in the pipe wall than smooth friction conditions. Perforations in the pipe wall can lead to high stress concentrations and increase the risk for failure. Designers should consider perforation characteristics when assessing the structural adequacy of corrugated HDPE pipes for land drainage.

Summary: This study compared laparoscopic lavage with resection surgery for Hinchey III perforated diverticulitis, finding that laparoscopic lavage had lower complication rates and shorter hospital stays. Patients who underwent resection surgery had more comorbidities. More readmissions were observed in patients who received laparoscopic lavage, but reoperation rates were similar.

Summary: The study investigated stoma-specific and generic health-related quality of life in patients with and without a parastomal bulge. Results showed that patients with a parastomal bulge experienced significantly impaired HRQoL across all domains compared to those without, particularly in Social Functioning and Mental Health. Additionally, a large bulge exceeding 10cm negatively impacted HRQoL across all domains, independent of time with the bulge.
