Summary: The study examined the association of chronic pain, multisite pain, and mental health with sickness absence among younger employees. The results showed that chronic multisite pain was associated with long-term sickness absence, particularly among employees with poorer mental health. There was a synergistic interaction between gender and multisite pain for total sickness absence days, with stronger associations among women.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate whether participants with chronic pain recall greater susceptibility to motion sickness before chronic pain onset. Data from 530 patients and 165 pain-free controls were collected and analyzed. The results suggest that in some cases, susceptibility to motion sickness appears to pre-date persistent pain, supporting the possibility of overlapping mechanisms between motion sickness and chronic pain.

Summary: This study aims to assess the association between daily temperature and sickness absence episodes in Barcelona province between 2012 and 2015. The study found that low temperatures increase the risk of new sickness absence episodes, especially due to respiratory and infectious diseases. Specific prevention plans are necessary for cold situations.

Summary: The study found that during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, sickness absence rates were over 20% lower compared to the corresponding time period in 2019. However, there were significant variations in trends for different illness categories, with a decrease in cancer-related absences by 24% and an increase in mental illness absences. Additionally, there was a doubling of new absences for pregnancy-related disorders from May to July 2020, limited to women with earlier COVID-19 sickness absence.

Summary: This study aims to examine the longitudinal associations between cannabis use and risks of short, medium, and long sickness absences. The results showed that cannabis use more than once a month increased the risk of short and medium sickness absences at one-year follow-up, with a dose-dependent relationship. Stratified analyses also revealed that cannabis use was associated with an increased risk of sickness absences in older individuals, men, participants with good health, those living or having lived as a couple, and those with open-ended contracts.

Summary: The study found that physical work environment factors had stronger associations with sickness absence when excluding short-term (1-5 days) episodes and focusing on episodes of 6 days or longer. Psychosocial work environment factors were consistently and significantly associated with sickness absence regardless of the inclusion of short-term episodes in the analysis.

Summary: This study examined school absence in primary education in the Netherlands, finding that sickness absence was the most prevalent type of absence in both mainstream and special schools. Extensive sickness absence was associated with factors such as age, parental educational level, doctor's visits, and unauthorised absence, highlighting the need for public health interventions to address this issue and prevent negative impacts on children's development.
