Summary: The study estimated the relative risk of IBD among first-generation and second-generation immigrants in Denmark, finding that the risk of IBD was lower for first-generation immigrants and increased with longer duration of stay in Denmark. The relative risk of IBD was lower only among women for second-generation immigrants.

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have a higher risk of developing optic neuritis (ON) compared to those without IBD. ON occurs more frequently in IBD patients aged between 30 and 39 years, with comorbidities including neuromyelitis optica (NMO), acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Other factors besides anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha treatment for IBD are more likely associated with the development of ON.

However, a majority of patients did not adhere to the recommended treatment duration according to international guidelines. Younger patients were more likely to discontinue antidepressant treatment earlier.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the bidirectional association between infectious gastroenteritis (IGE) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). By analyzing data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, it was found that there is a bidirectional association between IGE and IBD. IBD patients were more likely to have been exposed to IGE within 6 months to 5 years before diagnosis compared to non-IBD controls. Additionally, the risk of subsequent IGE was higher in IBD patients after diagnosis.

Summary: This study used Danish nationwide registries to investigate the association between antibiotic exposure and the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The results showed that antibiotic exposure was associated with an increased risk of IBD, especially in individuals aged 40 years and older. The risk was highest within 1-2 years after antibiotic exposure and with the use of antibiotics targeting gastrointestinal pathogens.

Summary: The study found that children with IBD and their parents exhibited poor knowledge regarding the side effects of steroid therapy, the role of surgical treatment in IBD, dietary restrictions, and risks associated with herbal medicines. Patients' IBD-KID scores were associated with patient sex and age, while parents' scores were related to patient age and treatment with immunosuppressive agent. The study suggests the importance of implementing better education programs for patients and parents.

Summary: This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the impact of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of infants from NICU hospitalization to one year post-discharge. The study found that lower HRQL during NICU stay was associated with earlier gestational age, postnatal corticosteroid usage, outborn status, and gastrostomy tube placement. Lower HRQL at 3 and 12 months post-discharge was associated with readmissions, home oxygen use, parent-reported difficulty breathing, lower developmental scores, and not playing with other children. Most parents reported similar or improved HRQL after discharge, but parents of infants with respiratory symptoms experienced less improvement. Efforts to improve parent HRQL should focus on respiratory symptoms and social isolation.

Summary: This study aims to determine if children with elbow flexion contracture (EFC) caused by brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) are more likely to develop shoulder contracture and undergo surgical treatment. A retrospective review was conducted on children under 2 years old with BPBI who presented to a single children's hospital. The results showed that patients with EFC had reduced shoulder range of motion and higher odds of shoulder contracture and surgical treatment. Prompt referral to a BPBI specialty clinic is recommended for evaluation and potential surgery.
