Summary: Iron absorption primarily takes place in the proximal duodenum, which is typically damaged in CD, leading to decreased iron absorption and IDA. The most common extra-intestinal manifestation of CD is IDA, which can be managed effectively with GFD.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of non-celiac endoscopic findings in patients undergoing endoscopy to confirm celiac disease diagnosis. The results showed that celiac disease patients had a lower prevalence of non-celiac endoscopic abnormalities, while older patients had a higher prevalence of non-celiac gastroduodenal mucosal damage.

Summary: Iron is essential for life, and its deficiency can have detrimental effects on health, particularly in patients with celiac disease. The decision on how to replenish iron stores and the route of administration depends on factors such as the severity of symptoms, health-related quality of life, tolerance and efficacy of oral iron, among others.

Summary: The study found that early endoscopy after admission for acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding was associated with better outcomes compared to urgent or late endoscopy, especially in patients with non-variceal bleeding. This suggests that patients with non-variceal AUGIB should receive endoscopy within 24 hours, while also highlighting the importance of prior resuscitation and pharmacotherapy.

Summary: This study investigates the rates of malignancy in patients with iron deficiency anemia and without anemia, and finds that the risk of gastrointestinal cancer is significantly higher in anemic patients. Over 60% of patients had gastrointestinal pathology to account for iron deficiency, supporting the need for baseline endoscopy in patients with iron deficiency.

Summary: This study assessed the frequency, severity, morphologic features, and pathogenic factors of anemia in patients with Celiac Disease (CD) and found that iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is common, especially in women. The study also showed that some women with CD continue to have IDA despite following a strict gluten-free diet, and low body mass index and menstrual abnormalities might contribute to the persistence of anemia.

Summary: A novel hemostatic hybrid hydrogel comprised of hyaluronic acid and polyethylene glycol stabilized by thiourea-catechol coupling and disulfide bonds is reported for endoscopic hemostasis in upper GI hemorrhage. The hybrid hydrogels exhibit enhanced mechanical properties and good blood clotting ability, showing promising results in both rat and pig models. The sustained hemostatic function of the hybrid hydrogels make them a potential candidate for clinical applications in endoscopic hemostasis.

Summary: Significant translational research advances have been made in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) research field in recent years. Endoscopic evaluation is a reasonable option for acquiring upper GI tissue for research purposes with minimal risk. The optimal number of biopsy samples and sample storage is crucial and might influence results. Few reports have been published on methods for sample collection from endoscopic biopsies. This review provides a protocol for collecting study samples for upper GI research, including microbiome, DNA, RNA, protein, single-cell RNA sequencing, and organoid culture, through a comprehensive literature review. Different methods and sample sizes are recommended for different types of analysis.

Summary: Video capsule can illuminate the entire gastrointestinal mucosa. Upper gastrointestinal capsule endoscopy has the potential to detect pathology in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, and determine the need for biopsy or intervention. Sequential innovations were required to address the challenges in esophageal and gastric imaging. The latest development of high frame rate upper gastrointestinal capsule endoscopy has surpassed dedicated esophageal capsule technology.

Summary: Coeliac disease is an autoimmune intestinal disease induced by gluten, and adherence to gluten-free diet is an effective treatment. The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining health, which is regulated by diet. There is a need for alternative treatments to GFD due to the increasing prevalence of coeliac disease.

Summary: Our analysis indicates that minimally invasive surgery is associated with reduced short-term postoperative complications and shorter hospital stay compared to open surgery, despite longer mean operative time. Interestingly, only a minority of patients requiring operative therapy in our study were of Asian descent in the Western hemisphere, in contrast to regions where right colon diverticulitis is more prevalent.

Summary: This study examined the regulatory T-cell immune response related to exercise-associated chikungunya arthritis flare (EACAF). The findings suggest that relative decreases in GARP expression may indicate a decreased level of immune suppression. Treg populations in patients with CHIKV arthritis may contribute to arthritis flares during exercise, though current research is conflicting.

Summary: According to the study on patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, it was found that the combination of bougie and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) can reduce the incidence of dehydration events, while the use of bougie alone may increase the risk of dehydration. Not using any sizing device showed similar outcomes to using various combinations of sizing devices. These findings emphasize the need for standardization of sizing devices in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and suggest that foregoing sizing devices may be a management option without early adverse sequelae.
