Use ofContrast-EnhancedUltrasound in Ablation Therapy ofHCC: Planning, Guiding, and Assessing Treatment Response

Maria Franca Meloni, Giampiero Francica, Jason Chiang, Andrea Coltorti, Roberta Danzi, Paul F. Laeseke

Summary: CEUS plays a vital role in managing HCC patients treated with ablation therapies, providing advantages such as real-time imaging, high sensitivity, and cost-effectiveness. Its integration with other imaging modalities like contrast-enhanced computed tomography and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging enhances the overall patient care.

Role of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in the Detection of Complications After Ultrasound-Guided Liver Interventional Procedures

Giampiero Francica, Maria Franca Meloni, Laura Riccardi, Francesco Giangregorio, Eugenio Caturelli, Fulvia Terracciano, Ilario de Sio

Summary: This pictorial essay presents the contrast-enhanced ultrasound features of a wide range of vascular complications and injuries of the surrounding abdominal and chest wall occurring after liver interventional procedures, with a special focus on diagnosing complications such as hemorrhage.

The Use of Ceus Software with No Contrast Media Administration in the Diagnosis of Pneumoperitoneum

Michele Altiero, Giuseppina Dell'Aversano Orabona, Ettore Laccetti, Alessandro Rengo, Roberta Danzi, Federica Romano, Marco Di Serafino, Francesca Iacobellis, Giampiero Francica, Mariano Scaglione, Luigia Romano

Summary: This study evaluated a new diagnostic ultrasound tool based on the contrast-specific software commonly used for contrast-enhanced ultrasound examination (CEUS), without the use of sonographic contrast media, to detect free intra-peritoneal air. The use of contrast-specific software in emergency situations improved image quality and achieved higher levels of sensitivity and specificity compared to standard ultrasound examination, allowing radiologists to expedite diagnoses.

Development of a risk score to predict portal vein tumor thrombosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Raffaella Tortora, Nunzia Farella, Filomena Morisco, Carmine Coppola, Francesco Izzo, Angelo Salomone Megna, Alessandro Federico, Vincenzo Messina, Gerardo Nardone, Guido Piai, Enrico Ragone, Luigi Elio Adinolfi, Giuseppe D'Adamo, Maria Stanzione, Giampiero Francica, Pietro Torre, Vincenzo De Girolamo, Nicola Coppola, Maria Guarino, Marcello Dallio, Lucia Rocco, Giovan Giuseppe Di Costanzo

Summary: The study aimed to develop a predictive score for tumor thrombosis in hepatocellular carcinoma patients. Analysis of data from 2243 patients revealed that PVTT was associated with poorer prognosis and correlated with tumor size, growth pattern, and alpha-fetoprotein level. A risk prediction score based on eight variables was developed, which can help clinicians identify patients with more aggressive cancers and higher mortality rates for optimized management of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Emprint Microwave Thermoablation System: Bridging Thermal Ablation Efficacy between Human Patients and Porcine Models through Mathematical Correlation

Andrea Cafarchio, Marcello Iasiello, Maria Chiara Brunese, Giampiero Francica, Aldo Rocca, Assunta Andreozzi

Summary: This study investigated the in vivo ablation characteristics of a microwave ablation antenna in the livers of humans with tumors. The results showed a worse correlation between ablation volume and energy delivered in vivo compared to ex vivo, likely due to the absence of perfusion.
