Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of government-funded chronic disease management policies on long-term outcomes (survival, hospital presentations, and preventive medication adherence) in patients with stroke/Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). The results showed that government-funded chronic disease management policies significantly improved the long-term survival rate of patients with stroke/TIA.

Summary: This study examined the epidemiology of lupus nephritis (LN) in a specific region of the US over a 4-decade period. It found that the incidence and prevalence of LN increased over time, with female and non-Hispanic White individuals being more affected. LN patients had a higher mortality rate and a significant risk of developing end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Summary: This study aimed to assess the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of major congenital anomalies (CAs) in Qatar. The study found that the incidence of any CA among live births in Qatar was 1.3%, with cardiovascular system (CVS) anomalies being the most common. Multiple pregnancies, parity, and maternal BMI were associated with specific CAs. CAs were significantly associated with high rates of caesarean deliveries, low Apgar scores, in-hospital mortality, and neonatal intensive care unit admission.

Summary: Despite the global market of dietary supplements, the impact of these supplements on kidney disease remains uncertain. A study in Korea analyzed data from over 13,000 adults and found a significant association between dietary supplements and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Vitamin and mineral intake was the most common type of supplement, followed by omega-3 fatty acids and ginseng. Those who consumed amino acids and proteins, ginseng and red ginseng, and herbal medicine had a higher prevalence of CKD, while probiotic supplement users had a lower prevalence. Further research is needed to understand the specific effects of each supplement on CKD.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of a 6-week Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) on self-efficacy, mental health, health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), and health responsibilities among vulnerable populations with chronic disease. The results showed that the intervention improved self-efficacy, mental health, HR-QoL, and health responsibilities for patients with chronic conditions, but did not significantly impact dietary habits, physical activity, substance use, and sleep and fatigue. For caregivers without a chronic condition, only doctor visits significantly decreased.

Summary: Despite efforts to improve screening for CHB in high-risk populations and provide care for those with chronic infection in the United States, data shows that a large proportion of at-risk individuals remain untested and only a minority of those with chronic infection receive long-term care. Additionally, even among patients being treated for CHB, only a small minority undergo basic testing and screening for disease staging and complications.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a novel prognostic index for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients treated with atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (ABE) in the first-line setting. Using recursive partitioning analysis (RPA), the patients were categorized into high-risk, intermediate-risk, and low-risk groups. The study concluded that the ABE index allows for easy stratification of HCC patients undergoing first-line treatment with ABE.

Summary: This study evaluated the risk of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection based on vaccination status, predominant variant, and time after initial infection. The results showed that two doses of vaccine and prior infection could reduce the risk of reinfection, while natural immunity had low protection against the Omicron BA.1 variant. Combined vaccination and natural immunity were more effective in preventing reinfection than either alone.

Summary: Surgical resection and radiofrequency ablation are preferred options for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and understanding the causes of recurrence and identifying its predictors are priorities in HCC research. Recent insights suggest that vascular invasion and angiogenesis play key roles in HCC recurrence, and agents targeting these hallmarks should be prioritized in early-stage HCC clinical trials. Patient enrollment in clinical trials should also consider the biological characteristics of their inherent disease.

Summary: This study compared the clinical and imaging characteristics of Italian patients with Takayasu arteritis (TAK) and large vessel-giant cell arteritis (LV-GCA). The results showed that LV-GCA patients had a higher prevalence of males and more frequently presented with cranial symptoms, fever, polymyalgia rheumatica, and hypertension. TAK patients had longer delay to diagnosis and presented more frequently with loss of pulses of large arteries, vascular bruits, limb claudication, myocardial infarction/angina, and hypertension induced by renal artery stenosis. In terms of treatment, TAK patients received higher doses of prednisone, had longer duration of prednisone therapy, and received traditional immunosuppressants and biological agents more frequently. Flares were more frequent in TAK patients, while no differences were observed for long-term remission. New vascular procedures were more frequently performed in TAK patients. Imaging at diagnosis showed that TAK patients had more frequent vascular stenosis/occlusion and a higher number of vessels with structural damage, while LV-GCA patients had a higher number of inflamed vessels.

Summary: Plasmapheresis donation is generally safe, but its long-term effects remain unclear. The amount of anticoagulant used in the process varies, and it is influenced by factors such as hematocrit, total blood processed, plasma collected, and donor characteristics. Summary: This study aimed to assess whether the effect of high temperature on mortality differed in COVID-19 survivors and naive individuals. Data from summer mortality and COVID-19 surveillances were used. The results showed a 3.8% excess risk in summer 2022 compared to 2015-2019, with a 20% increase in the last fortnight of July, the period with the highest temperature. The increase in mortality rates during this period was higher among naive individuals compared to COVID-19 survivors. Time series analysis confirmed the association between temperatures and mortality in naive individuals but not in COVID-19 survivors.
