Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of lower-extremity amputations (LEA-DFD) before and after the establishment of a Diabetic Foot Multidisciplinary Unit. The results showed a significant reduction in the rate of amputations due to foot disease in patients with diabetes after the establishment of the unit.

Summary: The high prevalence of lower extremity ulceration and amputation in people with diabetes is strongly linked to difficulties in reducing high plantar pressures. Current offloading footwear lacks patient adherence and does not adapt to the dynamic changes in pressure distribution. This article summarizes the development of intelligent pressure offloading footwear to prevent and treat diabetic foot ulcers.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and the development of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). It finds that DR is associated with a higher incidence of DFUs.

Summary: Diabetic foot disease (DFD) is a major cause of hospital admissions and amputations. This review analyzed the incidence of hospital admissions for DFD conditions and diabetes-related amputations in representative populations. The findings suggest that hospital admission rates for DFD conditions are higher than amputation rates, and the hospital admission rates for DFD conditions are not decreasing in many populations. Consistent definitions and data from low- and middle-income countries should be included in future studies.

Summary: The study aims to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of diabetic patients with foot ulcer (DFU) in Kabul diabetic medical center (KDMC), Afghanistan. A descriptive study was conducted on DFU patients admitted to KDMC between September 1, 2019, and August 31, 2020. The study found that DFU affects approximately one-tenth of diabetic patients, with a significant number requiring orthopedic treatment.

Summary: This research aimed to determine risk factors predicting major amputation in diabetic patients with foot ulcers. Invasive ulcer depth and C-reactive protein levels were found to be significant predictors. The median time from hospitalisation to lower extremity amputation was approximately 35 days, with most at-risk patients falling within that timeline.

Summary: The diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), a common and serious complication of diabetes, is influenced by the individual's social environment and access to healthcare. Financial insecurity and social protection systems play a significant role in DFU prognosis, while the relationship between socioeconomic and socio-educational deprivations and DFU is more complex. Understanding the correlation between DFU risk and social deprivation depends on how social deprivation is calculated and how questions about the relationship are framed.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the differences between sexes in patient characteristics, ulcer severity, and outcomes in individuals with a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). Men presented with more severe DFU than women. Female sex was significantly associated with a higher probability of ulcer healing.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the microbiologic profile and susceptibility pattern of diabetic foot infection patients requiring hospitalization. The results showed that Enterococcus and Staphylococcus aureus were the most prevalent pathogens, while Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common Gram-negative bacterium. The knowledge of microbial characteristics and susceptibility patterns is essential for guiding empirical therapy for DFI patients.

Summary: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are two significant complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). This review examines the epidemiologic and pathophysiological links between DFU and CKD, as well as the actions taken to improve management in the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) population. Specific measures for patients undergoing dialysis have been found to improve the prognosis of DFU and reduce the rate of major amputations.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the relationship between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) to provide evidence for preventing diabetic complications. A meta-analysis of 11 articles involving 10,208 patients was conducted, revealing that DR significantly increased the risk of DFU occurrence (47.94% vs. 16.38%; OR, 4.13; 95% CI, 2.33-7.33; p < 0.001). These findings emphasize the importance of regular screening for these complications in patients with DR to prevent serious adverse outcomes of diabetes. However, further high-quality studies are needed to validate these conclusions.

Summary: This study analyzed the bacterial etiology, antibiotic resistance profile, and clinical outcomes of foot ulcer-associated amputations in persons with diabetes. The results showed that Gram-negative bacteria were the major pathogens causing amputations, and the incidence of multi-drug resistant bacteria associated with foot ulcers could limit the availability of antibiotic treatments.

Summary: The incidence of DFU hospitalizations in patients with type 2 diabetes has increased between different age groups, especially in younger participants. Factors such as PSN, peripheral arterial disease, and suboptimal glycemic control at baseline were identified as independent predictors of incident hospitalization for/with DFU.
