Summary: Two 12-day courses of teplizumab in children and adolescents with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes showed benefit with respect to the preservation of beta-cell function, but no significant differences between the groups were observed with respect to the secondary endpoints.

Summary: This study investigated the association between chronotype and glycemic control, antidiabetic treatment, and risk of developing complications in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that evening chronotype individuals had higher levels of glycated hemoglobin and fasting plasma glucose, as well as a higher prevalence of cardiovascular complications. Additionally, their glycemic control was poorer. Therefore, controlling chronotype may be important for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Summary: The biomarkers of beta-cell death in diabetes indicate that beta-cell death may occur in individuals with obesity and T2D, but more refined study designs are needed to better align sampling with disease progression events.

Summary: There is a recognition that T1DM is a heterogeneous disease with distinct endotypes, which has important implications for clinical practice. The current classification schema for diabetes mellitus does not capture the complexity of the disease or guide clinical management effectively. Identifying endotypes can help achieve precision medicine in diabetes mellitus and improve prediction, prevention, and treatment of T1DM.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of intensive diabetes management to achieve near normalization of glucose levels on preservation of pancreatic beta cell function in youth with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. The results showed that although the intensive management group achieved excellent glucose control, it did not affect the decline in pancreatic C-peptide secretion at 52 weeks.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes accounts for nearly 90% of global diabetes cases, with an increasing number of affected individuals, particularly among young people. Early detection and proactive management are crucial for preventing complications and reducing mortality. Technology and precision medicine offer potential improvements to treatment outcomes but face significant barriers.

Summary: This study investigated the non-linear relationship between BMI and LDL-C in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The results showed an Inverted U shape association between BMI and LDL-C in male participants with T2DM, while no such relationship was found in female patients with T2DM.

Summary: The discovery of insulin injection a century ago revolutionized the treatment of diabetes. However, current insulin injection therapy is unable to address the underlying causes of the disease. To achieve long-term treatment and understand the molecular mechanisms of type 2 diabetes, new technologies such as human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived islets are needed.

Summary: The risk of progressing to type 1 diabetes from autoantibody positivity is related to age. It is not clear whether age influences patterns of C-peptide loss or changes in insulin sensitivity in individuals who progress to stage 3 type 1 diabetes.

Summary: Diabetes is a complex disease characterized by the increase and subsequent apoptosis of pancreatic beta cells. Various conditions can affect the homeostasis and viability of the beta cells. It has been found that different polyphenols may have regulatory effects on these mechanisms, offering potential for diabetes treatment.

Summary: The study aimed to determine whether presentation, progression, and genetic susceptibility of adult-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D) are affected by diagnosis age. The results showed that age of diagnosis was not associated with C-peptide loss, baseline C-peptide, and T1D genetic susceptibility. Despite similar presentation, older adults were less likely to be diagnosed with T1D, treated with insulin, or admitted to hospital.

Summary: The global prevalence of diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer's disease is increasing alarmingly with the aging of the population. There is a strong association between type 2 diabetes and an increased risk of dementia. The amyloid cascade, altered glucose metabolism, and insulin signaling may play key roles in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. Impaired insulin and IGF-1 signaling, as well as GSK3 beta and DYRK1A, could be potential therapeutic targets for both diseases.

Summary: The prevalence of type 1 diabetes is rising steadily and vitamin D may contribute to this increase. This systematic review examined studies on vitamin D and type 1 diabetes, finding strong associations between low vitamin D levels and type 1 diabetes. Animal studies and human trials also suggest that vitamin D treatment or supplementation can be beneficial in reducing the risk of type 1 diabetes. Maintaining optimal circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels may help to prevent or delay the development of type 1 diabetes.

Summary: The translation mentions pancreas transplantation and islet transplantation as established treatments for IDDM, and suggests that stem cell-derived cell transplantation therapy may be an alternative to the limited supply of donor islets in the future. It also summarizes recent developments in transplantation therapy for diabetes and research on using stem cells for diabetes complications.
