Summary: Using linear mixed-effects models, we found that lactation and prepregnancy BMI status have independent effects on postpartum BMI changes. Lactation can help overweight mothers lose weight better, while non-lactating overweight mothers are more likely to experience weight gain.

Summary: Based on the study findings, perineal trauma rather than mode of birth is associated with sexual dysfunction in the first year after childbirth. Anal sphincter injury, episiotomy, and instrumental vaginal birth all increase the risk of sexual dysfunction.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of severity of prematurity on the course of parental perinatal depression (PND). Findings revealed a general decrease in PND levels over time. In terms of birth weight and parental role, parents of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants showed higher PND levels in the early stages, but experienced a greater reduction in symptoms over time.

Summary: This cohort study aimed to estimate the risk for readmission within 1 year postpartum and identify the most common diagnoses for individuals with and without severe maternal morbidity (SMM) at delivery. The results showed that individuals with SMM had a higher cumulative incidence of readmission throughout the year, with sepsis and hypertensive disorders being the most common reasons.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of gut microbiota in Nigerian infants and finds that the method of birth and feeding practices influence the composition of the microbiota. Breastfed and mixed-fed infants have different microbial profiles, and the introduction of solid foods encourages the colonization of specific marker organisms associated with carbohydrate metabolism.

The study found that breastfeeding did not significantly affect these factors in the first year after delivery.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the impact of weight and biological changes during pregnancy and the extended postpartum period on cardiometabolic risk, as well as the associations between postpartum health behaviors and cardiometabolic risk. With a sample size of 250 women and a longitudinal repeated measures design, the research will provide insights to inform targeted health strategies for childbearing women to promote health and reduce cardiometabolic risk.

Summary: Cesarean delivery (CD) is associated with an increased risk of suicide attempts during the first postpartum year, but is not associated with deaths by suicide. A study in Sweden showed that CD slightly increased the risk of suicide attempts, compared to vaginal delivery. Understanding the association between CD and maternal suicidal behaviors can help improve maternal mental well-being and reduce the risk of suicide.

Summary: This multicentric cohort study investigates the changes in dietary patterns during pregnancy and postpartum in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), as well as the association with BMI variation at six and twelve months postpartum. The study identifies two healthy dietary patterns that are associated with less weight gain, while a high-risk pattern consisting of ultra-processed, high-calorie foods and sweetened drinks is associated with weight gain postpartum. Furthermore, the study finds that dietary habits worsened from pregnancy to postpartum, leading to weight gain. Therefore, postpartum support is crucial in preventing weight gain and obesity.

Summary: This study evaluated the changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and serum lipids in lactating women during the first postpartum year, and the influence of physical activity (PA). The study found that lactating women experienced weight loss and a decrease in BMD, while lipid profiles improved. Physical activity had a positive effect on serum lipids but did not significantly impact BMD.

Summary: This study compared the screening accuracy, risk of GDM, and risk of LGA between twin and singleton pregnancies using various 50 g-GCT cutoffs. The results showed that for any given 50 g-GCT result, the probability of GDM was higher in the twin group, while the probability of LGA was lower.

However, the extent to which the co-occurrence of GHTD and GD is associated with the risk of CVD remains largely unknown.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of the antepartum 75g-oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for future type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in nulliparous pregnant women who tested negative for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). A population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted in Ontario, Canada from 2007 to 2017. The results showed that the antepartum OGTT can be used to refine the future risk of T2DM even in nulliparous pregnant women who tested negative for GDM. The model combining OGTT values and clinical characteristics showed a detection rate of 43% for developing T2DM at 5 years post pregnancy with a false-positive rate of 20%.
