OBJECTIVE-To investigate the proportion of individuals at high risk of type 2 diabetes who perceive the need for lifestyle counseling, factors associated with this perception, and whether the perceived need is associated with subsequent attendance in lifestyle intervention. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-Baseline and intervention data were obtained from 10,149 participants in a Finnish National Diabetes Prevention Project. RESULTS-In total, 36% of men and 52% of women perceived the need for counseling. Most of the risk factors did not increase the perceived need for counseling. Those agreeing to attend supervised lifestyle intervention were more likely to report a perceived need than those who agreed on a self-initiated lifestyle change or those who refused to attend lifestyle intervention. The perceived need was associated with actual attendance in the lifestyle intervention only among women. CONCLUSIONS-It will be vital to find additional means to support lifestyle change.

Formation and Validation of the Healthy Diet Index (HDI) for Evaluation of Diet Quality in Healthcare

Summary: The study showed that the Healthy Diet Index (HDI) is inversely correlated with total fat, saturated fat, monounsaturated fat, and glycaemic index of diet, while positively correlated with carbohydrates, protein, fibre, magnesium, iron, and vitamin D. HDI is also associated with various biomarkers and anthropometric measurements, making it a valid tool for measuring adherence to a health-promoting diet and supporting individualised dietary counselling.

Serum Levels of Plasmalogens and Fatty Acid Metabolites Associate with Retinal Microangiopathy in Participants from the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study

Vanessa Derenji de Mello, Tuomas Selander, Jaana Lindstroem, Jaakko Tuomilehto, Matti Uusitupa, Kai Kaarniranta

Summary: Elevated serum plasmalogen dm16:0, saturated odd-chain FA 15.0, and omega-3 very long-chain FAs were found to be associated with a decreased occurrence of retinal microaneurysms (MA). The correlation of high serum triglycerides with MA occurrence was attenuated when considering these MA-associated serum lipid markers.

Enhanced Eating Competence Is Associated with Improved Diet Quality and Cardiometabolic Profile in Finnish Adults with Increased Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Summary: The study found that improvements in eating competence were associated with increased diet quality, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and decreased body mass index and waist circumference, regardless of baseline eating competence. Therefore, eating competence could be a potential target in lifestyle interventions aiming to improve the cardiometabolic health of people at risk of type 2 diabetes.

Prevalence of Childhood Obesity by Country, Family Socio-Demographics, and Parental Obesity in Europe: The Feel4Diabetes Study

Summary: The Feel4Diabetes study recruited 12,193 children and their parents from six European countries to investigate the prevalence of childhood obesity and its association with socio-demographic characteristics and parental obesity status. The study found that living in low income or economically crisis countries, having a father with less education, and having one or both parents who were obese were associated with a higher likelihood of childhood obesity. These findings suggest the importance of targeting the whole family and considering socioeconomic factors in childhood obesity prevention programs.

Indolepropionic Acid, a Gut Bacteria-Produced Tryptophan Metabolite and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Ratika Sehgal, Vanessa D. de Mello, Ville Mannisto, Jaana Lindstrom, Jaakko Tuomilehto, Jussi Pihlajamaki, Matti Uusitupa

Summary: The relationship between gut microbiota, diet, and the human body is complex, with tryptophan derivative indolepropionic acid (IPA) playing a crucial role in metabolic and immune functions and in the onset and development of metabolic disorders such as T2D and NAFLD. IPA levels are heavily influenced by diet, particularly dietary fiber, and show significant variations among individuals, which may be partially explained by genetic variants associated with specific diseases like T2D.
