Hydroxychloroquine, COVID-19 and diabetes. Why it is a different story

Anca Pantea Stoian, Doina Catrinoiu, Manfredi Rizzo, Antonio Ceriello

Summary: Hydroxychloroquine has been suggested as a potential treatment for COVID-19 due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. Individuals with diabetes may benefit from its use, but caution is needed because of its known hypoglycemic effects.

DPP-4 Inhibitors Have Different Effects on Endothelial Low-Grade Inflammation and on the M1-M2 Macrophage Polarization Under Hyperglycemic Conditions

Valeria De Nigris, Francesco Prattichizzo, Hiroaki Iijima, Antonio Ceriello

Summary: The study found that teneligliptin, but not sitagliptin, has anti-inflammatory effects in various low-grade inflammation models, promoting a switch from M1 to M2 phenotype in macrophages and reducing hyperglycemia-induced endothelial inflammation.

Is time ready for combination therapy at diagnosis of type 2 diabetes?

Francesco Prattichizzo, Antonio Ceriello

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT-2 inhibitors have beneficial effects on the cardio-renal axis in patients with T2D and CVD, even in those without pre-existing CVD. Background therapies do not alter the efficacy of these drugs. Some authors propose that these novel agents may challenge the position of metformin as a first-line treatment for T2D, and recommend a combination therapy of metformin and a trial-proven novel agent as the best initial option.

Summary: Globally, regulations regarding the inclusion of GI on food labels vary, with some countries in Asia allowing low GI claims while others permit voluntary claims only. Inconsistencies in food regulation worldwide undermine consumer and health professional confidence, calling for greater harmonization and consistency in standards.

Repurposing SGLT-2 Inhibitors to Target Aging: Available Evidence and Molecular Mechanisms

Rosalba La Grotta, Chiara Frige, Giulia Matacchione, Fabiola Olivieri, Paola de Candia, Antonio Ceriello, Francesco Prattichizzo

Summary: Caloric restriction promotes longevity and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2-i) mimic some of its benefits by lowering glucose, promoting metabolic shift, and potentially inhibiting cellular senescence. SGLT-2i also show promise in improving low-grade inflammation, a key driver of aging commonly referred to as inflammaging.

Summary: Periodontitis is a disease that leads to the loss of periodontal attachment and bone resorption. COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. Investigations have shown a possible relationship between periodontitis and COVID-19, as both conditions can lead to cardiometabolic impairments. This review aims to summarize the existing evidence regarding the link between periodontitis and COVID-19 and their associated complications.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and risk of thyroid cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Giovanni Antonio Silverii, Matteo Monami, Marco Gallo, Alberto Ragni, Francesco Prattichizzo, Valerio Renzelli, Antonio Ceriello, Edoardo Mannucci

Summary: Our meta-analysis suggests that GLP-1RA treatment may be associated with a moderate increase in relative risk for thyroid cancer in clinical trials, with a small increase in absolute risk. Longer duration studies are needed to assess the clinical implications of this finding.

Summary: Introducing glycated albumin (GA) as an add-on strategy for oral therapy in insulin-naive individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) shows potential to improve therapeutic success rates, reduce treatment costs, and enhance quality of life for both individuals and caregivers. Experts suggest that while there may be initial training investments required, in the long run, GA could become a preferable technology from an organizational perspective.
