Summary: This study aimed to identify factors associated with canalicular injury (CI) after Mohs micrographic surgery. The results showed that CI was associated with infiltrative, morpheaform, and/or micronodular-type basal cell carcinoma. Initial tumor location in the medial canthus was related to CI, and there was a higher likelihood of final defects involving the medial canthal region.

Summary: This study found that dermatologists were fairly accurate at predicting postoperative pain, with their predictions correlated with patient-reported pain. When physicians overestimated pain, they were not more likely to prescribe opioids.

Summary: Most patients undergoing Mohs surgery were willing to attempt home suture removal and were more willing, confident, and less anxious after viewing educational resources. Patients with previous suture removal experience were more likely to attempt removal after their procedure, and 97% of patients who were willing were successful. No major complications were reported.

Summary: Older age, previous cryotherapy, and multiple prior surgeries were significantly associated with an increased risk of MMS requiring >= 3 stages. Recurrent BCC was associated with the risk of complicated MMS in partially adjusted multivariate analyses, but not in the fully adjusted analyses. Knowledge of these risk factors may help improve the planning of Mohs surgeries.

Summary: This multicenter, prospective cohort study found that most complications after interpolated flap repair for post-Mohs defects of the nose are minor and related to flap placement. It confirms the safety of performing this procedure in the outpatient setting under local anesthesia.

Summary: As the US population ages, safe surgical procedures are necessary for treatment of cutaneous neoplasms in very elderly patients. This study aimed to determine the incidence of complications associated with Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) in patients aged 85 and older, and the risk factors that predispose to complications. Results showed that independent risk factors associated with a statistically higher incidence of complications were anticoagulant use, extremity location, greater than 2 MMS stages, and flap repair.

Summary: The study suggests that opioids should not be routinely prescribed to every patient undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) and reconstruction, as this may help combat the opioid epidemic by reducing exposure to these drugs.

Summary: Scalp reconstruction has evolved with time, presenting challenges particularly in cases of scalp cancers with large defects. More than 10 years of consecutive scalp reconstructions by the senior author provided data and recommendations for surgeons. Most defects were repaired using adjacent tissue transfer or Integra dermal regeneration templates, with some complications observed but scalp reconstruction was deemed safe for outpatient settings, even in elderly patients.

Summary: Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is used to remove cutaneous tumors in cosmetically sensitive areas, with various reconstructive options available post-tumor removal such as primary closure and skin grafts. The use of second intention healing has decreased with advancements in surgical and reconstructive techniques. This review critically evaluates the indications, advantages, and complications of second intention wound healing post-Mohs surgery.
