Summary: The current levels of lead in mineral and MVM products have decreased over time, but some products may still contain excessive amounts. Consumers have difficulty knowing the actual lead content in products, highlighting the need for independent third-party lab testing.

Summary: Preventing non-communicable diseases is important for healthy aging, and dietary supplements can potentially support this prevention. However, the effectiveness of multivitamin-multimineral (MVM) supplementation in reducing cancer incidence seems to differ by gender, with positive effects observed in men but not in women.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the levels of toxic elements in children's multivitamin-multimineral supplements and evaluate their associated risks. The concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) were measured using ICP-MS. The results showed that the concentrations of these elements were within safe limits and the estimated daily intakes were below the tolerable limits. The non-cancer and cancer risks associated with oral exposure to these elements were found to be low and negligible.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the confounding effect of dietary fiber on the association between cholesterol and PFAS. A Bayesian correction for measurement error was implemented to estimate the true long-term fiber intake for each participant, and models were fitted to NHANES data. The results showed a 6.4% decrease in the coefficient for PFOA after adjustment for soluble fiber intake.

Summary: This study examines the effects of a bovine colostrum-containing multivitamin multimineral (MVM) supplement on the health of adult men and women. The results show that MVM has a good safety profile and may improve serum levels of vitamin D, folate, vitamin B12, and salivary IgA levels. These findings suggest an overall improvement in several aspects of health and further research is needed to confirm these results.

Summary: This study examined the use of dietary supplements (DS) in the US population from 2007-2018 using multiple assessment methods. The results showed an increase in the prevalence of DS use as well as micronutrient-containing DS use over time. The use of single-nutrient DS increased, while the use of multivitamin-mineral DS decreased. Different population subgroups showed variations in DS use.

Summary: Precise dietary assessment is crucial in nutritional research to understand the relationship between diet and health. This study reviewed five studies on the validity and reproducibility of dietary supplement instruments in the United States. Self-administered questionnaires agreed well with 24-hour dietary recalls and product inventories in assessing the prevalence of commonly used dietary supplements. The inventory method was found to be more accurate in measuring nutrient amounts. Further research is needed to advance knowledge in the assessment of dietary supplements.

Summary: The use of multivitamin multimineral supplements is prevalent in the Saudi population of Riyadh, with a prevalence of 47%. The study found significant associations between MVMM use and gender, marital status, education, exercise habits, smoking, special diets, and fruit and vegetable consumption. Daily use and hospital prescriptions were common among MVMM users. Regulatory policies and increased awareness of the benefits and side effects of dietary supplements are necessary.

Summary: Resveratrol is a well-known phytochemical that is widely used in dietary supplements and botanical products. It has a wide range of pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory activities, and can be used to treat multiple diseases. Establishing safety, efficacy profile, and physicochemical characterization are the major requirements for its development as a phyto-pharmaceutical.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the joint effects of folic acid, iron, and multivitamin supplementation during pregnancy on the risk of obesity in preschoolers born small for gestational age (SGA). The results showed that prenatal supplementation of folic acid was associated with a lower likelihood of being an obese preschooler born SGA, while the ingestion of multivitamin or iron supplements did not seem to be related to childhood obesity in preschoolers born SGA.

Summary: This study found that MV/MM supplementation can improve blood vitamin concentrations and prevent declines in vitamin status in healthy older men. However, it did not have a significant effect on blood mineral concentrations. In addition, MV/MM supplementation prevented the decline in cellular O-2 consumption rate.

Summary: This study analyzed the consumption of dietary supplements in Italian undergraduates and found that 71.5% of the respondents reported using dietary supplements. Women were more likely to use dietary supplements following a doctor's prescription and to buy them in a pharmacy, but reported more adverse effects than men. The main aim of using dietary supplements was to improve general health.

Summary: Dietary supplements contain bioactive constituents significant to health, but pose challenges to database developers due to poorly characterized ingredient data and lack of standardization. Lack of controlled vocabularies for supplements and nutrient analysis software programs hinder interoperability. Federal government involvement can help improve database quality and enhance interoperability.

Summary: This study examined the effects of multivitamin-mineral and cocoa extract supplementation on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. The results showed that multivitamin-mineral supplementation did not reduce the risk of cognitive impairment, but it may have slowed cognitive declines in individuals with incident MCI.

Summary: This study proposed a framework for identifying nutrients or food components of public health relevance. Through a decision-tree framework, nutrients of public health concern for Americans were identified, including fiber, calcium, vitamin D, and potassium. The research aims to help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and promote health and energy balance.

Summary: This study examined the association between protein intake and skeletal muscle mass and strength in middle-aged adults aged 40-59. Results showed that higher protein intake was related to greater muscle mass and strength, emphasizing the need for further research on dietary protein as a potential modifying factor of sarcopenia risk in middle age.

Summary: The Total Nutrient Index (TNI) is a useful construct for assessing total micronutrient exposures of underconsumed micronutrients among US adults. The study found that TNI scores were high on exemplary menus and moderately correlated with the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) 2015. TNI scores differed significantly between different groups and showed higher correlations with biomarker data compared to dietary sources alone.
