Summary: This study used a nationally representative sample to analyze the trends, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of traumatic subdural hematoma (TSDH) in the US. The study found an increase in the number of TSDH cases, longer hospital stays, a decrease in surgery rates and inpatient mortality, and an increase in complications. Injury severity score and comorbid conditions requiring anticoagulants were associated with higher odds of inpatient death and complications.

Summary: Novel machine learning algorithms were developed to predict discharge to non-home facilities and length of stay following complex head and neck surgeries. The models showed high specificities for predicting discharge to non-home facilities and had similar performance for predicting length of stay, with both models developed into a web-based interface.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the risk factors for readmission within 30 days or prolonged length of stay after cervical disc arthroplasty. Results showed that postoperative superficial wound infection, ASA classification, and BMI were predictors of readmission, while female sex, diabetes, postoperative wound dehiscence, ASA class, and operative time were significantly associated with prolonged length of stay.

Summary: The discharge destination is associated with the 30-day outcomes of surgical patients, and non-home discharge is more closely related to adverse outcomes.

Summary: This study found that although the length of stay and 30-day complications decreased over time, the proportion of events occurring after discharge increased for several complications following colon surgery. Factors such as female sex, ASA III/IV/V classification, dependent functional status, and higher BMI were associated with the development of post-discharge complications. The findings emphasize the importance of a patient monitoring program to identify and manage post-discharge complications early.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the characteristics of patients who died during prolonged hospital stay. The study found that these patients were typically complex cases, of older age, residing in urban areas, admitted urgently to internal medicine or oncology wards, and commonly diagnosed with pneumonia. Terminal patients often face the situation where therapeutic options are exhausted and emergency hospitalization is not suitable for their needs. Living in an urban area with access to palliative care hospital beds influences the decision for patients to die in hospital.

Summary: Prolonged time with loop ileostomy is associated with increased complication rates for patients and increased length of stay in hospitals. Resources should be allocated for timely closure of loop ileostomies.

Summary: This study validates the use of prolonged length of stay as a substitute for traditional coding of complications in colorectal cancer surgery to calculate failure-to-rescue rates. The results show that ICD-10 codes poorly identified complications, and prolonged length of stay could be a valid replacement when measuring failure-to-rescue in colorectal surgical patients.

Summary: Primary spine tumors, particularly intramedullary spinal cord tumors, are rare neoplasms that often require surgical treatment. Clinical variables were found to significantly influence prolonged hospitalization of patients with intramedullary spinal cord tumors, highlighting the importance of considering these factors in clinical and surgical decision-making.

Summary: This study aimed to construct machine learning models for predicting prolonged length of stay in ICU among general ICU patients, using four different ML methods. The GBDT model achieved the best performance in both internal and external validation, outperforming other models and the customized SAPS II model.
